Notes: Abstract The ability of a toxin producing strain of Aspergillus clavatus (HWU-GD1) from malting barley to hydrolyse starch at 30° C was demonstrated. Peak glucoamylase production was recorded on day 4 within the 5-day incubation period with a good correlation established between mycelial growth and enzyme production. A rapid disappearance of the starch in the growth-medium was accompanied with an accumulation of glucose in the medium within the first 48 h of incubation and a rapid drop in pH from a high level of 6.9 to as low as 4.2. Growth on varying carbon sources showed that glucoamylase production by A. clavatus strain HWU-GD1 did not depend on the presence of starch in the growth medium although its inclusion in the medium enhanced glucoamylase production. The enzyme was most active at pH 5.2 and a temperature of 40° C.
