Summary Periosteoplasty has been followed up experimentally and clinically during the past nine years. In the experimental study, the transplanted periosteum was found to produce new bones; in the clinical study, 309 patients who had undergone periosteoplasty were examined and 67% of them gave positive results. The angular measurements on the lateral cephalometric roentgenograms were analyzed. These showed that periosteoplasty is an effective method for the closure of the maxillary cleft.
