Notes: The past five years have withnessed significant progress in our knowledge of the metabolism and importance of endogenous, peripherally and centrally active amines. Most of the modern drugs which influence human mood, emotion, or temperament do so by their direct or indirect effect on the biosynthesis, metabolism, storage, or release of endogenous amines in the brain. The relationships discovered in this connection have deepened our understanding of the biochemical basis of acute, chronic, and hereditary mental disorders. The beginnings of a new science “psychochemistry” are discernible at this point.
