Notes: Abstract FIR laser lines close to the N+ 3 P 2−3 P 1 transition at 122 μm can be used as a local oscillator for heterodyne detectors. The frequencies of some candidate laser lines from CH2F2,13CH3OH, CD3OD, and CD3OH have been measured and the output power of the most interesting lines has been optimized.

Notes: Summary The optogalvanic signal (OGS) induced in a uranium-neon hollow-cathode discharge was measured as a function of the laser power density for the 0→16900 cm−1 (591.5 nm) uranium transition. Theoretical relations derived by solving a two-level system rate equations showed the OGS dependence on the laser photon flux, for a modulated c.w. light and for stimulated transitions starting from the ground state. A fitting of the theoretical relations to the experimental measurements allowed the determination of the σ0 τ product, that is, the saturation parameter of the transition. The results showed good agreement between the σ0 τ values obtained by the optogalvanic and the usual optical absorption processes.

Notes: Abstract In this work we present the results of an investigation about Doppler limited infrared absorbing transitions of the C-O stretching vibrational mode of13CD3OD by means of optoacoustic detection. This technique is an alternative, more sensitive and of higher resolution than the Fourier transform spectroscopy which is applied to this methanol isotopomer, due to the contamination problem associated with the fast exchange of OD by OH in the molecule. Using a waveguide CO2 laser of 290 MHz tunability on each line we were able to observe 69 absorptions, most of then of large offset. The data will be useful in theoretical analysis of this sample, as well as a guide in the search for new FIR laser lines.
