Notizen: Ethynylated polystyrene resins were prepared as functionalized polymer supports by the iodination reaction of macroporous polystyrene resins and reacted with transition metal diethynyl complex (Mt = Ni) and metal halides (Mt = Rh, Pd, and Pt) in a basic solvent using cuprous iodide as a catalyst to obtain macroporous polystyrene resins containing organotransition metals. The distribution of the metal acetylide complexes in the modified macroporous resins was determined by an electron probe microanalyzer. A gradient in the transition metal distribution was observed in any case of the modified resins. The stability of the organotransition metal complexes in the polymer matrix could be compared with a low molecular weight analogous complex quantitatively.

Notizen: We develop a numerical calculation scheme of a dynamics of the quantum network for linear molecular aggregates under time-dependent electric fields. Each molecule is assumed to be an electric dipole arranged linearly with an arbitrary angle from the longitudinal axis. This approximation is considered to be appropriate for the aggregates with large intermolecular distances and allows us to treat intermediate- and large-size aggregates without enormous direct calculations of the Coulomb interactions. The molecular interactions are taken into account by adding the radiations from these dipoles to the external electric fields. The dynamics is performed by solving the coupled Liouville equation constructed from the Liouville equation for each dipole. The effects of the retarded electric fields are evaluated with numerically exact precision by using the sixth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. As a simple example, we examine the linear aggregates involving two dipoles composed of two-state molecules under the continuous laser fields. The effects of the intensity of external fields, the intermolecular distances, and the angles between the dipole and the longitudinal axis on the population differences are investigated. The linear polarizability spectra are calculated by using the definition of nonperturbative polarizability. An abrupt change like the phase-transition behavior in the variation in the population differences for the applied field intensities is observed for the dimer models. Based on these results, we anticipate the population differences for larger (intermediate)-size aggregates.   © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Quant Chem 70: 77-87, 1998

Notizen: Ab initio calculations of the second hyperpolarizabilities (γ) for one-dimensional hydrogen chains (Hn) with different bond-length alternations and charges are performed. We investigate their signs, magnitudes, and chain-length dependences at various electron correlation levels using an extended basis set. Remarkable differences in the γ are observed for different bond-length alternations and for different charged states. In order to elucidate the differences in γ, spatial contributions of electrons to the γ are analyzed for these short and long Hn chains by using the second hyperpolarizability density plots. The effects of the introduction of charged defects into the linear chains on the γ are also investigated by varying the intercharged defects distance.   © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: A procedure for the calculation of molecular properties in the full quantum mechanical treatment is presented. We formulate the non-Born-Oppenheimer density functional theory and propose its numerical scheme. We numerically calculate the energy, particle densities, interparticle distance, and (hyper)polarizability of the hydrogen molecule and its isotopes using this method and discuss isotope effects on the physical properties.   © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: The topographic distribution of blood vessels in Peyer's patches of mice was studied by light and scanning electron microscopy with whole mounts of flattened gut segments and vascular corrosion casts. Peyer's patches are imbedded in the intestinal wall and share its blood supply. Two to four mural trunks may contribute to the area of the patch. In and around the lymphoid nodules the microcirculation is highly specialized. The nodule is permeated by a meshwork of fine capillaries that is supplied by arterioles entering on the serosal and lateral surfaces. Blood flow to the lymphoid nodule appears tobe monitored by arterial sphincters; the dense lymphatic tissue can also beby passed by arteriovenous communications. An extensive venous network encircles the nodule. Most of these venules are lined by high endothelium which is penetrated by lymphocytes. The geometry of these vessels suggests a slow and turbulent flow in these vascular segments that may aid margination of lymphocytes. A planar capillary plexus lies subjacent to the mucosal epithelium in the dome area.

Notizen: High-endothelium venules of mouse Peyer's patches were examined by scanning electron microscopy, and a quantitative assessment was made of the location of lymphocytes in relation to endothelial cells. Untreated mice and mice with markedly depressed levels of circulating lymphocytes were used. Lymphocytes were divided into adhering and migrating cells and as to association either with the body of the endothelial cell or with its cell border. Over 90% of all adhering cells and the great majority of migrating lymphocytes were located at the cell border. The exception was one animal in which most migrating lymphocytes appeared to penetrate the endothelial cells. Our data lend strong support to the currently held view that most migrating lymphocytes traverse the endothelium by following an intercellular path but that, under certain conditions, lymphocytes may penetrate the cytoplasm of endothelial cells.

Notizen: A technique was developed that allowed the in vivo observation of Peyer's patches in the mouse for several hours. Untreated animals and animals depleted of lymphocytes were used. In this species, blood vessels associated with the lymphoid nodules are readily visible through the thin serosal muscle coat. High-endothelium venules are recognized by the large number of refractile cells that adhere to the luminal surface. A colloidal carbon suspension injected intravenously labeled high-endothelium venules and was only rarely seen in arterial and capillary segments or in venules of the gut parenchyma. When fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled (FITC-labeled) syngeneic spleen cells were injected, they appeared in vessels of the Peyer's patch within a few seconds and began to adhere to the luminal surface of high-endothelium venules. In untreated animals, peak numbers of fluorescent cells were reached after about 20 min. Many adhered but some were swept away. In lymphocyte-depleted animals, however, peak numbers were reached after only a few minutes and most cells remained attached.

Notizen: The radiation-induced polymerization of ethylene was carried out by use of a benchscale plant with a flow-type reactor of 1 liter capacity under the following conditions: pressure, 200-400 kg/cm2; temperature, 30-90°C; irradiation intensity, 3.8 × 105 rad/hr; and ethylene flow rate, 300-3000 nl/hr. The molecular weight of polymer formed was shown to decrease with increasing reaction temperature and to increase with increasing pressure. When the ethylene flow rate increases, the molecular weight decreases in the polymerization at 30-60°C, but it does not change in the polymerization at 75-90°C. Methyl group content, which is a measure of short-chain branching of the polymer, increases with increasing reaction temperature, i.e., ca. 1 CH3/1000 CH2 at 30°C and ca. 9 CH3/1000 CH2 at 90°C. Methyl content is independent of the ethylene flow rate. The changes in the melt index of polymer with reaction conditions corresponds to the change of the molecular weight. The density, crystallinity, and melting point of polymer decrease with the reaction temperature as the short-chain branching increases, and they are almost independent of ethylene flow rate and pressure.
