Notes:
We examined with scanning electron microscopy the otolithic organs of chick embryos aged 6 to 21 days. Otoconial forms not previously reported in adult birds or mammals were found. On the basis of the size and prevalence of various types of otoconia at different embryonic stages we organized the otoconial forms into a possible growth sequence starting with an early “double-fluted” or skeletal form and terminating with the normal mature form found in adults.
