Notizen: Talc surface treatment was carried out using a series of phosphate coating levels. The coated talc was characterized using quantitative diffuse reflectance FTIR analysis, which revealed a saturation of surface coverage at around 6 wt % phosphate. Coated and uncoated talc had a nucleation effect; and the degree of crystallinity of composites increased initially, then gradually decreased with increasing phosphate coating level. The talc dispersion was improved as coating level increased; however, the platelet alignment was reduced. The addition of 0.5 wt % phosphate to talc resulted in a maximum increase in tensile strength and a significant drop in flexural modulus. Improvement of falling weight impact properties of the composites were achieved at high coating levels. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Compression moldings were produced from two rigid PVC compounds at a range of temperatures. The tensile and impact properties of these moldings depended primarily on the level of particle fusion as assessed by extrusion rheometry. Properties were not related to the level of primary crystallization measured by X-ray diffraction, but the particle fusion process appears to be at least partly due to recrystallization. Fusion occurred more readily in the mass PVC compound than in the suspension PVC compound. Annealing the sheet produced at 200°C caused changes in crystallinity which resulted in small property changes. The maximum annealing effect occurred at 110°C.

Notizen: Thermal analysis, solvent sorption, density measurement, and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to investigate structural changes in a variety of PVC compounds which were extruded or compression-molded at temperatures in the range 150-220°C. In all cases processing at lower temperatures in this range resulted in a disappearance of primary crystallinity and a concomitant development of secondary crystallinity, of lower order. In many cases processing above 190-200°C caused a small increase in crystallinity. It is believed that this is more ordered secondary crystallinity, which is therefore detectable by X-ray diffraction and also capable of influencing density and solvent sorption behavior. The observed structural behavior depends on shear as well as temperature. Primary crystallinity is higher in compression moldings, which have experienced lower shear levels, and the increase in crystallinity at higher temperatures is also greater. Equilibrium solvent sorption depends on the presence of primary and ordered secondary crystallinity. Diffusion is, however, unaffected as it occurs through amorphous and disordered crystalline regions only.

Notizen: The behavior of unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (UPVC) during single screw extrusion was studied. The melting and gelation mechanisms under a variety of operating conditions were identified using microscopy, density measurements, and thermal analysis. The compound followed the behavior of wall-slipping materials, the melt forming a pool near the passive flight of the screw. Gelation involved the progressive destruction of the original powder morphology and the development, upon cooling, of an entanglement network with primary and secondary crystallinity. Both the breakdown and internal fusion of the grains were observed, depending on the location of the material around the screw. Tensile yield parameters were found to be independent of the gelation level. The values of the post-yield parameters reached a maximum for gelation levels in the range of 70% to 85%.

Notizen: Thermal analysis and wide-angle x-ray diffraction were used to assess the crystallinity for a series of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) samples, and the use of two complementary techniques was found beneficial. Two polymers were studied; a commercial suspension grade PVC, and an experimental grade of higher syndiotacticity. Both were examined as powders, and after processing. All samples were also examined after heat treatment at various temperatures between 100 and 175°C. Annealing the suspension grade of PVC appeared to cause a small change in total crystallinity, but little change in crystallite size. When the low temperature powder was annealed, some increase in crystallinity was detected. However, when this polymer was milled, there was a significant increase in crystallite size, and crystallinity seemed to increase further. Particularly noticeable was the increase in the amount of high melting crystallites.
