Notes: A polynomial subdistribution method for analyzing the correlation profile in photon correlation spectroscopy of polymer solutions is described. This method generates a continuous distribution function from the measured photoelectron time-correlation function, which can be related to particle size or molecular weight distribution of solute. The method is tested using simulated data for unimodal and bimodal distributions and compared with cumulant and histogram methods, respectively. The polynomial subdistribution method has an advantage in that it not only generates a continuous distribution curve but also works well for bimodal distributions whose peaks are close together.

Notes: The direct observation of flow in the internal mixer with various rotor geometries is described. With decreasing distance between two rotors, additional transfer flow was observed in the inter-rotor area. The FAN (Flow Analysis Network) method with assumption of fully filled, Newtonian fluid and isothermal condition was employed to simulate the flow patterns in the mixer with non-intermeshing and intermeshing rotors. The distributive mixing capability was considered in terms of the fractional flow in the mixer calculated for various rotor geometries.

Notes: New block copolymers of polystyrene with polyesters have been synthesized and investigated as compatibilizing agents. The addition of block copolymers in immiscible blends of polybutylene terephthalate and (i) polystyrene, (ii) polystyrene/poly(2,6-dimethyl 1,4-phenylene oxide) as well as (iii) high impact polystyrene drastically reduced the dimensions of the dispersed phase and stabilized the phase growth with annealing time. Stress-strain curves for the binary blends indicate brittle behavior. The addition of more than 10 wt% of block copolymers transforms their brittle characteristics to ductile behavior.
