Notizen: Poly([4-(methacryloyloxy) butyl]pentamethyldisiloxane), PMBPD, has been prepared for the first time. At the weight average molecular weight of 55,900, it is a clear, viscous liquid with a glass transition temperature, Tg, of 236K. Copolymers with methylmethacrylate have also been prepared. The homo-and copolymers, all of which have methacrylate backbones with pendant siloxane groups, were blended with poly(methyl-methacrylate), PMMA. Using the existence of a single Tg as a definition of miscibility, it was found that blends of either PMMA or PMBPD with random copolymers are miscible. However, in spite of a clear appearance, the blend of the two horriopolymers were found to have two distinct Tgs.

Notizen: A series of low molecular weight (≈40000) copolymers of methylmethacrylate (MMA) and 4-(methacryloyloxy)butylpentamethyldisiloxane (MBPD) have been synthesized by free radical polymerization in dimethylformamide solution. The microstructure, as derived from 13C NMR spectra, indicates that the copolymers are about 80% syndiotactic with an overall random distribution of mers. At room temperature, copolymers rich in MMA are clear, rigid glasses but become liquid at high MBPD content. Blends of these copolymers with PMMA are all heterogeneous with visible phase separation over most of the composition range. Differential scanning calorimetry studies show the presence of two Tg's when the relative concentration of PMMA to copolymer is high. Blends of two co-polymers of similar siloxane content produce clear films with no indication of phase separation. The permeability to oxygen at 25°C increases from 0.20 for pure PMMA to 3.0 (fmol/m·s·Pa.) for a copolymer of MMA/MBPD of the mole ratio of 3:1. Evaluation of the permeation behaviors of the blends suggests that blends rich in siloxane exist as a layered structure with the PMMA rich component dominating the observed permeability.

Notizen: Films cast on gold surfaces from 3% methylene chloride solutions of syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) (Mn = 23,000) and random copolymers of PMMA and 4-(methacryloyloxybutyl) pentamethyldisiloxane (MBPD) (Mn = 40,000) are all heterogeneous with visible phase separation occurring over most of the compositional range. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) shows that for PMMA blended with the copolymers there is an excess of silicon, ranging from 1.9 wt% to 9.7 wt%, in the surface exposed to air during casting, while the lower surface exposed to the gold is depleted in silicon. X-Ray mapping and image analysis show that for blends containing 50% or less of siloxane copolymer the upper surface is composed of large siloxane rich domains in a PMMA matrix while the lower surface is composed of much smaller and less abundant siloxane domains in a PMMA matrix. In addition, the siloxane domains of the upper surface contain small PMMA domains. For blends with a greater siloxane content, the upper surface is composed of a siloxane matrix while the lower surface remains PMMA rich.

Notizen: The effect of added silica on the spherulite radial growth rates of isotactic poly(propylene oxide) (i-PPrO) has been investigated by optical photomicroscopy. Two different i-PPrO samples were used of different molecular weights and isotacticity, 87 and 100% as determined by 13C NMR. The addition of fine particle silica, an effective nucleating agent, depresses the spherulite growth rates throughout the entire temperature range, but the effect is more dramatic for the i-PPrO of lower isotacticity. For a given sample, the retardation increases as the quantity of filler increases. The growth rate-temperature behavior is analyzed in terms of the classical Hoffman-Lauritzen equation, modified to take into account the polymer-filler interaction.

Notizen: Isothermal radial growth rates (G) of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) spherulites in immiscible blends with a polyethylene based ionomer (1) partially neutralized with Zn+2, (2) completely acidified, and (3) completely esterified have been determined at crystallization temperatures between 118 and 124°C by time-lapse photomicroscopy. In these blends iPP spherulites grow with increased G as compared to that of pure iPP. This behavior is attributed to increases in the rate of transport, due to limited miscibility induced by mechanical mixing. However, subtle differences in the melting behavior suggest that changes in Spherulite morphology may also be a contributing factor.

Notizen: The addition of one part, by weight, of fine particle silica to one hundred parts isotactic poly(propylene oxide) causes a retardation in the rate of radial growth of spherulites at all temperatures between 268 and 313 K. The results have been fitted empirically by use of the Hoffman-Lauritzen equation suitably modified to account for effects due to the presence of the silica. At certain temperatures the presence of the silica also causes a change in the morphology of the spherulites.

Notizen: Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, χ, have been determined as a function of plasticizer composition for poly(vinyl chloride) in various binary mixtures of phthalate ester plasticizers using a method involving the micro-determination of the temperature at which PVC particles in excess plasticizer appear to melt. An optimum composition at which χ goes through a minimum was found to exist for some of the systems. A good correlation between the apparent melting temperature tm and χ for the neat plasticizers with PVC was also established.

Notizen: The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, x, has been determined as a function of plasticizer composition, φ2, for several ternary mixtures of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and different pairs of plasticizers, selected mainly from the family of aliphatic esters. The method employed was the micro-determination of the apparent melting temperature of a PVC particle in excess plasticizer. In some systems X changed fairly gradually as a function of φ2, while other systems exhibited a pronounced minimum in the X - φ2 plots. Attention has been drawn to the similarity of this latter behavior to the well known co-solvency effect. The existence of such minima is of partical interest in plasticized PVC formulations.
