Notes: The mechanism of tensile cyclic fatigue failure in conventional glass fiber dominated composites has been investigated using single fibers, strands, and composites. Surface damage to the fibers resulting from a fretting type of contact is identified as the dominant mechanism. Macrofibers of glass or glassceramic with residual surface compression have been developed to overcome the sensitivity both to cyclic and static fatigue. The macrofibers and their composites with several different matrices show greatly improved tensile fatigue resistance.

Notes: The fatigue behavior of injection-molded tensile bars of short-fiber-reinforced theromplastics is described and related to the fatigue behavior of the matrices and the strength of the fiber/matrix interface. A brittle matrix system based on polyphenylene sulfide is shown to behave in a similar manner to long-fiber composites. Glass-fiber reinforcement in this matrix gives fatigue sensitivity that correlaes with that of unimpregnated glass fiber strands, while carbon-fiber rein-forcement gives better fatigue resistance. A well-bonded, due-tile matrix system based on nylon 6,6 gives matrix-controlled fatigue sensitivity. Fatigue data for glass- and carbon-fiber-reinfoced nylon 6,6 superimpose on the matrix fatigue data when normalized by the ultimate tensile strength. Another ductile matrix, polyetherther ketone, is very fatigue-resistant, but its composite progressively loses its reinforcing effect in fatigue, apparently due to interface failure. A transitional matrix, polysulfone, shifts from ductile to fatigue-crack-dominated failure as the cyclic stress is reduced. Its composites show an analogous failure mode shift, and the high cycle-fatigue response is correlated with fatigue-crack-growth data.

Notes: A series of radiation sensitive and relatively high molecular weight poly(tetramethylene adipate) polyurethanes containing pendant acryfate functionality was synthesized. These radiation curable materials possess good mechanical properties and behave like common thermoplastic elastomers prior to chemical crosslinking which further enhances their strength and insolublizes them. Both the precursor and the cured materials were characterized by stress-strain, differential scanning calorimetry. and dynamic mechanical testing. It was found that the poly-(tetramethylene adipate) soft segments with molecular weight of 2000 or higher were crystallizable in the cross-linked network. The soft segment molecular weight and the diisocyanate type were found to be important in determining the tensile and thermal properties of these male-rials. The crosslinking process was found to depress crystallization of the soft segments and to improve tensile properties. Increasing the soft segment molecular weight resulted in an Increased elongation al break bill a decreased ultimate stress for both the precursor linear polymers and the crosslinked materials.

Notes: The dynamic mechanical response of adhesively bonded metal beams has been examined over a broad temperature range using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA). The measured dynamic mechanical response of the bonded beam contains rich information about the viscoelastic properties of the adhesive resin such as glass transition temperatures. The measured storage moduli and loss factors of the bonded beams are very sensitive to changes in the properties of adhesive induced by exposing the beam specimens to environmental attack. Dynamic mechanical responses associated with dry adhesive resin, water plasticized resin, and aggregated water were observed for an electro-galvanized steel/epoxy beam exposed to water. The effect of the presence of an interfacial accommodation zone (IAZ) between adhesive resin and metal substrate was also examined; measured properties were very sensitive to the presence of a low modulus IAZ. It was successfully demonstrated in this study that the DMTA testing of bonded beams is a potentially useful tool for studying dynamic performance and durability of automotive adhesive joints.
