Notizen: The constant-volume heat capacities of gaseous perfluorocyclobutane and propylene have been measured over a considerable range of temperatures and densities with a new type of adiabatic calorimeter. This calorimeter differs from previous constant-volume gas calorimeters in having very thin walls and being equipped with an internal motor stirrer to provide temperature uniformity. The experimental results have been compared with the predictions of the Benedict-Webb-Rubin and Martin-Hou equations, by use of published values of the zero-pressure-constant-volume heat capacity. The over-all agreement is satisfactory, with a maximum difference between the experimental and calculated heat capacities of 6.7%; however the comparison reveals several interesting systematic differences between the experimental and calculated values of the derivatives of the constant-volume heat capacity with respect to temperature and density.

Notizen: A complete analytical solution is developed for the number of equilibrium stages in separations processes for which operating and equilibrium lines are not necessarily straight. The resulting equations are solutions of a Riccati difference equation and are applied to liquid-liquid extraction and the distillation of a binary mixture where the liquid and vapor flows are not constant because of the variation of the saturated liquid and vapor enthalpies with concentration. A specific example is given for the separation of ethyl alcohol and water in which the equilibrium curve is highly nonlinear and where a large number of plates are required in a pinch region. Another example is given for the extraction of methylcyclopentane from its solution in n-hexane using aniline as a selective solvent.

Notizen: A method was devised to yield chemical reaction kinetic parameters from nonisothermal, nonisobaric flow experiments. The system studied was the pyrolysis of propane at high temperatures (800° to 1,000°C.). At these temperatures the rates of the various reactions are so high that a batch or even an isothermal flow experiment is impossible. To keep the conversions low so that the initial stages of decomposition could be studied, the feed gas was diluted with varying amounts of nitrogen. Residence times in the reactor were in the millisecond range. The reactor exit gas was analyzed by mass spectrometry. The method developed in this work is not limited to simple kinetic studies, but can be useful in complicated series and parallel reactions which often require nonisothermal conditions.

Notizen: Based on properties which are characteristic of all gases, modifications are developed for an equation of state previously proposed in this journal (1). A specific application of the modified equation is made for the PVT data on carbon dioxide, and considerable improvement over the original equation is shown for densities in the neighborhood of 1.4 times the critical density. The new equation differs from the old equation only by the presence of the A5 and C5 terms, these having originally been taken to be zero.

Notizen: A rigorous method was developed to account for nonuniform temperature distributions in the analysis of kinetic data. The rate constants cannot be determined directly since they are functions of temperature, so equations were derived and solutions developed for the substantially temperature independent kinetic parameters, activation energy, and pre-exponential factor. A digital computer was used to evaluate numerically various integrals involved in the solution of the equations. The method developed here will be useful in all laboratory kinetic studies where limitations of heat transfer do not permit an isothermal experiment and in the analysis of kinetic data obtained from commerical or pilot plant units where the temperature distribution is nearly always nonuniform.Kinetic studies were made of the thermal decompositions of ethane, ethylene, and acetylene, all of which are high temperature fast reactions. The experimental conditions covered highly nonuniform temperature distributions with peaks from 730° to 1,330°C., a total pressure of 1 atm., varying amounts of nitrogen dilution, and residence times in the millisecond range.

Notizen: A pilot unit for the high-temperature irradiation of flowing reactants was designed for the beam port of a nuclear reactor. Radiation-thermal cracking of the n-heptane-hydrogen system was studied with molal H2/C7 ratios from 0 to 5 at 250 lb./sq. in., 600° to 750°F., 2 to 8 min. residence time, and up to 3,600 rep./min. Although conversions were low, the decomposition rate was significantly increased by radiation giving G values 〉 103. Product distributions were not significantly altered by radiation. These results, while different from low-temperature data, appear consistent with other published high-temperature results. Radiation yields were found to be reasonably linear with total dose from 0 to 14 krep., but a twofold increase was observed in passing from a molal H2/C7 ratio of 0 to 0.5.

Notizen: Generalized equations for vapor pressure and PVT behavior are used to develop a functional relationship between latent heat of vaporization and reduced temperature and pressure. This function leads to a graphical correlation which utilizes the slope M of the vapor-pressure curve at the critical point. The correlation gives the latent heat of vaporization at any temperature in the two-phase region for any substance for which the critical point and one vapor-pressure point are known. The correlation is particularly useful for prediction of latent heat of vaporization near the critical point by the use of information for removed from the critical. Included in the study are polar, nonpolar, organic, inorganic, and metallic substances. General predictions of latent heat as a function of temperature are within a few percent wherever comparisons can be made with experimental data.
