    Notes: The coefficients of the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state have been developed for argon. By employing these coefficients, the volumetric behavior of argon has been predicted with an average deviation of 0.241% for five hundred ninety-seven smoothed and experimental data points in the superheated region.At temperatures below the critical, two sets of Co's, one for the liquid and one for the vapor, were needed to relate the vapor pressure to the densities of saturated argon. However, consistent fugacities for the saturated vapor and liquid argon could not be predicted with these Co values. Therefore, another set of Co's was developed by equating the pure component vapor and liquid fugacities along the vapor pressure curve. These values were used to test the applicability of the equation of state to predict derived thermodynamic properties.The original BWR expression for calculating isothermal pressure effects on enthalpy was modified to include explicitly the temperature dependence of the coefficient Co. Vapor-liquid equilibrium relations for the argon-nitrogen system predicted by the standard BWR procedure were compared with experimental data.

    Notes: The intramembrane transport properties of carbohydrates were investigated in cellophane. The experiments performed were the measurement of net volume transfer under a concentration and pressure gradient and the solute transfer due to a concentration difference together with the physical properties of the membrane. The matrix of phenomenological coefficients characteristic to the transport was established after the phase boundary contributions were extricated from the experimental transport data. These thermodynamic coefficients were then interpreted through the Spiegler-Kedem-Katchalsky frictional model.The analysis of the frictional coefficients clearly indicated the importance of solute-polymer interactions. The magnitude of solute-solvent frictional coefficients in the membrane were compared with the corresponding interactions in free solutions. Their differences were explained in terms of the interaction of the solute with the macromolecular network and were quantitatively expressed by introducing two reduced frictional coefficients. The tortuosity factor was shown to be related to these interactions and not a simple geometric property of the membrane. The temperature dependence of the frictional coefficients was established.

    Notes: Dialysis of binary aqueous solutions of several sugars through a cellophane membrane was studied in a stirred batch dialyzer. Sherwood numbers describing mass transfer resistance in the fluid adjacent to the membrane were determined as a function of the corresponding Reynolds and Schmidt numbers. The results establish a reproducible environment for membrane testing in which a known controllable and small interfacial resistance is placed in series with that of the membrane. The results are also shown to support, for this geometry, the postulation of a third power relationship between eddy diffusivity and dimensionless distance from the phase boundary as well as the Sherwood-Ryan nondimensionalization of this distance.

    Notes: A molecular-based statistical simulation program was developed to study the covariance terms involved in the mass balance equations for complex chemical reactions during mixing. Several closure theories were compared to the simulations and available experimental data. The simple closure by Brodkey and Lewalle was found to be an extension of Toor's analysis applied to two reactions. This closure does not satisfy the molar fluctuation balance equation and was found only to represent the high Reynolds number data of Li and Toor. This result led to examining other possible closures which were based on Damkoehler numbers, reaction rate constant ratios, and limiting forms of the covariance term. These closures also were inadequate. The second reaction's covariance term varied from the product of the average values for each component to the Brodkey and Lewalle value for the range of Reynolds numbers considered.

    Notes: White PVC siding which has been exposed to sunlight will after removal from the sunlight develop a darker color (yellow-brown). The longer this sample remains unexposed to sunlight the greater the color development. Testing has indicated that one or more photochemical mechanisms are occurring during this color development. A sample which appears yellow upon arrival at the home location after outside exposure can be re-whitened by re-exposing the sample to sunlight. Drastic color change will occur within a short period of time, usually less than 72 hours. This sample will have attained its white color with little or no yellowing visible when an original unexposed sample is held next to it. Testing conducted at an Arizona test site has confirmed these theories. Six months and one year weathered white siding samples, when measured at the test site, both experimental and commercial, showed that when the weathered samples are removed from the test racks and tristimulus values are measured daily, marked color changes occur rapidly. This paper addresses data which indicate that color development does occur but only in the very thin surface (5 to 10 micron layer) of the weathered samples. If these samples are washed and the abrasive action is sufficient to remove the surface layer, color development will no longer occur during non-exposure to sunlight.

    Notes: This paper presents the results of an industry survey that was sponsored by the Ethylene Oxide Industry Council (EOIC). The EOIC operates as a special program of the Chemical Manufacturers Association. The members of EOIC account for over 85 percent of domestic production of EtO and cover a broad range of EtO users, including ethoxylators and sterilizers. The survey was done to collect current information in anticipation of responding to a proposed OSHA rulemaking for a short-term exposure limit for EtO. Specifically, the study was designed to collect information on the following: 1.History of the establishment of company EtO exposure guidelines.2.Current EtO workplace exposure monitoring practices, capabilities and methods.3.Current workplace exposure levels: Eight hour and short-term.4.Engineering control, respirator, and ancillary costs for compliance with the 1.0 Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) and projected costs for compliance with a 5.0 ppm or 10.0 ppm Short-term Exposure Limit (STEL).

    Notes: Organotin compounds have long been known in the PVC industry for their excellent performance properties in almost every application. Over the past several years, a wide variety of health and environmental studies have been conducted which demonstrate the safe use of these performance chemicals as PVC heat stabilizers. This paper introduces the “risk equation” and then applies this equation to the foreseeable exposure risks involved with the use of organotin stabilizers during PVC processing. Further, migration of organotin species from PVC end-use articles is discussed with comparison to established long-term no-effect levels for these chemicals. The environmental fate of organotin compounds and their effects on some species of microorganisms is also addressed. The risk equation is used to fully evaluate all potential hazards to provide a fully informed risk assessment for the use of organotin stabilizers in PVC.

    Notes: Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) is the revised original EPA test method “Extraction Procedure” (EP) designed to eliminate its recognized shortcomings. TCLP, like its predecessor EP, is used to identify those wastes which pose a hazard to human health and the environment if improperly managed. The objective of both procedures is to identify wastes which pose hazards due to their potential to leach significant levels of specific toxic chemicals. The new test is designed to improve the leaching of organic constituents and expands the toxicity characteristic list to include 38 additional chemicals. The expanded criteria list of hazardous constituents includes vinyl chloride monomer. This means if a PVC sample does not pass the TCLP test it becomes a hazardous waste when discarded The regulatory burden and disposal costs then increase significantly, perhaps exponentially, Adoption of TCLP now may require PVC users to obtain Federal or State permits to install facilities to comply with regulatory standards. Indications are that EPA may promulgate the final rule in 1988, but exclude waste water.
