    Notes: An experimental study in the behavior of nitrogen and neon pool boiling was performed. The test section consisted of a vertical pipe 3 in. O.D. × 7½ in. long. The variables studied are: heat input, submergence, and surface finish. Several copper heaters were tested, in addition to nickel and cadmium plated heaters. The results were correlated for nitrogen by an equation which gave an average deviation of ± 16% for all the heaters except the cadmium plated heater. The paper describes the experimental equipment and technique, summarizes the data, and compares them to literature values and equations.

    Notes: The boiling characteristics of liquid neon and nitrogen in vertical annuli ranging between 0.006 and 0.080 in. wide were studied. The centre tube wall, submerged to various depths, formed the boiling surface. Observations suggested a convective heat transfer mechanism, and correlation by a Dittus-Boelter equation form proved successful.

    Notes: Pressure-temperature data were obtained along isenthalps for nitrogen, methane, and three ternary nitrogen-methane-ethane mixtures. These data were differentiated to obtain Joule-Thomson coefficients over the temperature range from ambient to 200°K. and at pressures from 165 atm. to about 5 atm. Data for nitrogen was obtained down to 140°K.The resulting Joule-Thomson coefficients were compared with predictions based on the Beattie-Bridgeman and Benedict-Webb-Rubin equations of state and on the virial equation of state truncated after the third virial coefficient. These comparisons show that the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation could predict the data with a deviation averaging 1.7%. The Beattie-Bridgeman predictions were highly dependent upon the mixture rules used, with the best set of mixture rules giving an absolute average deviation of 4.8%. Predictions using the virial equation with virial constants obtained from the Lennard-Jones potential energy function using a geometric mean minimum potential energy deviated from the experimental data by 5%.In all of these comparisons, the virial coefficients of ethane appear to be in greatest uncertainty, and the predictions of mixture data high in ethane least satisfactory. Thus it appears that improved data on the pure components, particularly ethane, are vital to any satisfactory evaluation of mixture properties.

    Notes: Experimental results for the adsorption of the binary gas mixtures oxygen-nitrogen, oxygen-carbon monoxide and nitrogen-carbon monoxide on two synthetic zeolites are reported. In all of these experiments the temperature was -200°F. and the total pressure was 1 atm. Also reported are the isotherms for the three pure gases on the two zeolites at -200°F. The results indicate that these zeolites have a surface selectivity which is independent of any sieving effect based on the size of the adsorbed molecules. It does not appear that the strong separations obtained can be explained in terms of the van der Waals forces which are generally believed to be dominant in physical adsorption. The available methods of predicting binary adsorption data from the pure gas isotherms have been examined.

    Notes: Using a thermodynamically consistent form of equation of state proposed by Foulkes, one can determine the virial coefficients of the pressure expansion from Joule-Thomson coefficient data. A modification of the method has been applied for nitrogen and ethane within the temperature range from 50°C. to the normal boiling point. Mixture rules are proposed that allow reproduction of experimental data on μ for nitrogen-ethane mixtures at pressures below the critical pressure of ethane.

    Notes: A comparative study has been made on the predictive capabilities of a number of the more popular equations of state in use today. The equations were compared in their ability to predict the locus of points for which the Joule-Thomson coefficient is zero, the inversion curve.The prediction of an inversion curve is an extremely severe test of an equation of state. To date inversion curves have been calculated only for the Van der Waals, Dieterici, Lennard-Jones and Devonshire, and DeBoer-Michels equations of state. This study covers the Van der Waals and Dieterici equations as well as the Virial, Berthelot, Redlich-Kwong, Beattie-Bridgeman, Benedict-Webb-Rubin, and Martin-Hou equations of state.The results of the investigation show, among other things, that the Redlich-Kwong equation is quite unusual in that it predicts the inversion locus with more accuracy than any of the much more complex equations of state. Its predictive capabilities extend into the liquid region.
