Notizen: The viscosity-shear rate functions for polysulfone (PSF) condensates ranging from 0.4RV to 0.95RV were determined using capillary rheometry, The most probable distribution of molecular weights of these resins allowed facile comparison with the polydisperse Bueche theory for viscosity, The agreement in shape of the viscosity function with theory was good but the data were displaced by a factor of 3 to 4 to higher reduced shear rate, a fairly common occurrence for melts. The high absolute value of PSF viscosity was explained with existing empirical correlations as a combination of low critical molecular weight and strong intermolecular interactions. The temperature dependence of viscosity was found to be close to that for polystyrene in the temperature range, Tg + 90 to Tg + 190°C. The die swell, end corrections, and melt fracture characteristics were also determined. The latter was found to occur at a constant wall shear stress of about 6 × 106 dynes/cm2 while the die swell and end corrections were found to be small.

Notizen: Neck-in and maximum stress were studied in a tape-drawing experiment using a 3.5 MI low density polyethylene at 300°C. The conditions of the experiment were designed to reproduce closely those found in extrusion coating lines. The maximum stress was found to increase roughly with the 1.6 power of the drawdown ratio and the 1.0 power of the extrusion speed over a stress range of 4 × 103 to 5 × 105 Pa produced by drawdown ratios ranging from 2 to 22 and extrusion speeds of 2.3 to 6.1 cm s-1. The neck-in decreased weakly with drawdown ratio at low extrusion speed and with extrusion speed at constant drawdown ratio. After carefully characterizing the test resin in shear and extension, the similarities between predicted pure-shear (planar extension) transients and the tape experiments were studied. It was found that the trends, but not the magnitude of the experimental maximum stress were quite similar to the calculated longitudinal stress in pure shear. The behavior of the transverse to longitudinal stress ratio in pure shear was similar in behavior to the neck-in results, but considerable improvement was achieved by adding in a decayed stress from a simple-shear transient to simulate the conditions produced by the extrusion die. The philosophy of purposefully studying similarities between transient, pure or simple deformations and steady, complex processes is discussed.

Notizen: The polymerization in solution of a variety of water-soluble monomers with a variety of water-soluble redox initiators is described and a detailed study is reported on the polymerization, in aqueous solution, of methyl vinyl ketone and of methyl methacrylate under the influence of potassium sulfate-silver nitrate. Keeping the persulfate concentration constant and varying the silver nitrate or, conversely, keeping the silver nitrate constant and varying the persulfate, it is found that, except at very high concentration of catalyst, both the rate of polymerization and the molecular weight of the polymer bear a linear relation to the square root of the catalyst concentration, in harmony with the general theory of catalyzed bulk and emulsion polymerization. The molecular weight of the polymer formed diminishes with increase in the temperature of polymerization. The study of redox polymerization in water, without emulsifier, has been extended to the case of a mixture of a water-soluble and a water-insoluble monomer, and it has been found that copolymerization proceeds at a reasonable rate and frequently forms a stable latex. The copolymerization of styrene and 5 or 10 per cent of its weight of methacrylonitrile in water under the influence of a water-soluble persulfate-bisulfite redox pair has been examined with some closeness. Polymerization is apparently initiated in the aqueous solution, since, contrary to the state of affairs in emulsion polymerization, water-soluble retarders are more effective than oil-soluble ones, when the retarder is added at the outset. If the retarder is added at a later stage of polymerization, oil-soluble reagents are more effective than water-soluble ones. The water-soluble monomer enters into the polymer at a greater rate than the water-insoluble one, but it appears that, even at the earliest stage at which it is practicable to take samples co-polymerization occurs. The influence of catalyst concentration on the rate of polymerization, the molecular weight of the polymer, and the latex particle size was examined.

Notizen: A link between a substructure searching system and a 13C NMR data base has been established and permits the retrieval and examination of the chemical shifts associated with specific substructures. The means by which these searches are accomplished is described and the results from the searches are presented and discussed. The system is interactive, and can be used to locate in the data base the chemical shifts of carbon atoms in precisely defined environments. Alternatively, it may be used to learn the range of the chemical shifts possessed by particular types of carbon atoms, such as N-methyl or O-methyl carbons.

Notizen: The mass spectra of a series of ortho, meta and para substituted isopropyl benzene derivatives have been determined where the second substituent is —COOH, —C(O)NH2, —C(O)C6H5, —C(Ph)(=NPh) or —CH(Ph)(NHPh). Two bis-isopropylbenzophenones have also been studied. The spectra are characterized by prominent ortho effects which distinguish the ortho derivatives from the meta and para.

Notizen: An apparatus is described in which large numbers of algal cultures can be maintained under the following conditions: (1) Constant temperature within the range 5 to 70°C, four different temperatures being maintained simultaneously; (2) uniform illumination at intensities up to 20,000 metre-candles; (3) continuous shaking at variable speed; and (4) aeration under aseptic conditions with mixtures of up to four different gases in any desired proportions.Among other features, thermoregulator heads, flow-meters and heaters for sterile filters, of improved design are described. To illustrate the use of the apparatus, data showing the effects of light intensity and temperature on the growth of Monodus subterraneus are presented.
