Notizen: Abstract Autonomic reflexes were investigated in patients with the cardioinhibitory carodid sinus syndrome. Heart rate, blood pressure and forearm blood flow responses were recorded during prolonged head-up tilt, the Valsalva manoeuvre, lower body negative pressure and sequential respiratory cycles in ten patients and nine age-matched controls. The mean maximum R—R interval prolongation during carotid sinus massage was 4.4 s. Three patients had syncope during prolonged head-up tilt. Heart rate and blood pressure responses were similar for patients and controls who completed tilt. Responses to lower body negative pressure and Valsalva manoeuvre were similar for both groups. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia was significantly less marked in patients, 7 bpm (0 to 20 bpm) versus 15 bpm (6 to 35 bpm;p = 0.05). Therefore, neck massage and deep breathing produce abnormal cardiac vagal responses, whereas other reflexes, including response to lower body negative pressure and the Valsalva manoeuvre are within the normal range in cardioinhibitory carotid sinus syndrome.

Notizen: The influence of instrumental parameters on the matrix effects (ion and sputtering yield variations) observed in AlxGa1 - xAs are critically evaluated. Ion and sputtering yield data from three different SIMS instruments (ARL IMMA, Cameca IMS-3F and Atomika SIMS) are examined. The influence of primary ion (O2 +) energy and incident angle on the extent of surface oxidation was examined using AES. Although relative ion yields varied linearly with the matrix composition in all instances, these ion yield variations differed greatly (a factor of 50) between instruments. These differences were attributed to differences in the surface oxygen concentrations produced by the SIMS instruments. AlAs was shown to be completely oxidized under each of the SIMS ion bombardment conditions. However, the oxygen levels incorporated in GaAs and the other Al poor specimens depended largely on the incident angle and to a lesser extent on the ion energy. Small incidence angles (normal incidence) promoted the most extensive oxidation of the Al-poor specimens, resulting in the smallest ion yield variations with matrix. As with the relative ion yields, relative sputtering yields varied linearly with the matrix composition in all instances. However, in contrast to relative ion yields, the relative sputtering yields did not change significantly under the different instrumental conditions. It was concluded that incident angle and ion energy had approximately the same influence on the sputtering yields obtained from the reference and the sample matrices. Thus, the relative sputtering yields were insensitive to changes in these ion beam parameters.

Notizen: The application of isoelectric focusing (IEF), immunoglobulin G (IgG) immunofixation and silver staining for the analyses of unconcentrated cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) and sera are described. We have standardized these methods, and applied them to IgG oligoclonal band analysis. The sensitivity of the procedure was 0.3 μg IgG. Optimum results were obtained with 0.5 μg IgG in 5-20 μl application volumes. Equal quantities of CSF and serum IgG analyzed by IEF in 55 normal individuals showed comparable intensities and isoelectric points and of these, four individuals (8%) had bands in CSF which were not detectable in serum. The CSF and sera from patients with multiple sclerosis, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, Huntington's disease and Guillain-Barré syndrome were also examined. Pathologic banding patterns can be classified into three categories: Bands present (1) exclusively in CSF, (2) more intense in CSF compared to serum, and (3) equally intense in CSF and serum. Oligoclonal IgG bands are defined as bands found exclusively or more intense in CSF compared to serum, and are indicative of intra-blood-brain-barrier IgG synthesis.

Notizen: The effects of concentration on immunoglobulin G (IgG) oligoclonal bands after isoelectric focusing in cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) were examined using six concentration procedures, and the percent recoveries of IgG varied. The procedures, % IgG recoveries, and corresponding degrees of concentration are as follows: (1) Amicon CF25 membrane cone, 75 %, 45 ×; (2) Amicon CF50A membrane cone, 65 %, 3 ×; (3) Amicon CS15 Minicon, 47 %, 80 ×; (4) Microprodicon, 55 %, 35 ×; (5) collodion bag negative pressure dialysis, 50 %, 16 ×; and (6) microcollodion bag in Permasorb, 40-80 %, 10-60 ×. Ultracentrifugation of CSF at 100 000 g for 1 h prior to concentration using CF 25 membrane cones introduced not more than 5 % variation in the IgG concentrations. Isoelectric focusing was performed on 20 CSF samples concentrated by CF25 membrane cone, CS15 Minicon, and collodion bag, and no effects on the oligoclonal IgG banding patterns were found.
