Notes: Extensive networks of metastable ions link the major peaks in the electron impact mass spectra of two crown ethers containing 2,6-pyrido units. High-resolution mass measurements and the metastable peaks allow the elucidation of the fragmentation pathways. The spectra are influenced more by the presence of aromatic substituents than by the 2,6-pyrido units.

Notes: Abstract  The acute and chronic effects of streptozotocin diabetes on kidney and liver microsomal monooxygenases were studied using hamsters 2 days and 6 weeks following treatment with the diabetogen, respectively. Acute diabetes increased aniline hydroxylation and N-nitrosodimethylamine demethylation, decreased pentoxyresorufin O-dealkylation, without affecting benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylation and 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylation in kidney and liver microsomes. The effects of chronic diabetes on the microsomal monooxygenases were similar to the effects of acute diabetes, except that the chronic diabetic condition markedly decreased benzo(a)pyrene and 7-ethoxycoumarin oxidations in kidney microsomes. Total cytochrome P450 content and NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase activity in kidney and liver microsomes of the diabetic hamsters were similar to the controls. Gel electrophoresis of microsomes from control and streptozoptocin treated hamster tissues revealed that diabetes enhanced the intensity of protein band(s) in the P450 molecular weight region. Immunoblotting of microsomal proteins showed that acute and chronic streptozotocin diabetes induced proteins immunorelated to P450s 2E1 and 1A in kidney and liver. In marked contrast, the acute and chronic diabetic conditions decreased the level of a P450 2B-immunorelated protein(s) in kidney and liver. The present study demonstrates that acute and chronic streptozotocin diabetes has the ability to induce P450 2E1 and 1A and suppress P450 2B in hamster kidney and liver and that the hamster monooxygenase responds to diabetes differently from the rat enzyme.

Notes: A Markov chain model was used to model the axial mixing of solid particles in a motionless mixer having no moving parts. One step transition probabilities were determined experimentally for the model. Based on these transition probabilities, the model was able to predict spatial distribution of tracer particles up to seven steps of the Markov chain, which was equivalent to seven consecutive passes of the mixture through the mixer. Experimental results were in good agreement with those predicted from the Markov chain model.

Notes: Diffusion coefficients of argon, krypton, xenon, methane, carbon tetrachloride and the tetraalkyltins (methyl through butyl) were measured in methanol, 1-butanol and 1-octanol over the temperature range 298 to 433 K. With temperature-dependent solvent diameters fitted from the tracer diffusivity of one of the solutes, a rough-hard-sphere theory predicts well the observed tracer diffusivity over the solvent density range in which hard-sphere computer simulations are available. The Wilke-Chang correlation predicts diffusion coefficients in the higher alcohols with an average error of 80% and a maximum error of 200%. A correlation of the form Dμp/T = A where p and A depend on solute and solvent size is more successful giving an average error of 7% and a maximum error of 24%.

Notes: The laminar, isothermal entrance region flow of the Bingham fluid in a circular pipe is studied at first by using the momentum integral method and the boundary-layer equation for the Bingham fluid. In addition to the velocity boundary layer, the existence of the shear stress boundary layer is considered. The solution is valid only near the entry because of limitation of the boundary-layer model. The Campbell-Slattery method originally devised for the Newtonian fluid is also used to analyze the Bingham entrance region flow. The results are compared with those obtained through the use of the momentum integral method and those obtained through the use of the variational method by other investigators. While the results obtained in this work appear to be generally reasonable and valid, the results by the other investigators have been found to be somewhat erroneous.

Notes: Tracer diffusion coefficients in liquid cyclohexane of benzene, toluene, p-xylene, mesitylene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene have been determined from 298.2 to 523.2 K (TR = 0.54 ∼ 0.95) using the Taylor dispersion method. Positive deviations from the Arrhenius relationship are observed as the critical temperature is approached, but a rough-hard-sphere theory is found to be adequate for describing the data across the entire temperature range. On the basis of the computer simulation results for hard-sphere fluids, correlations involving solute and solvent critical volumes and their molecular weights have also been developed for practical applications. Tracer diffusivities in supercritical carbon dioxide are also adequately represented by the proposed correlation, as the fluid density is not far removed from that of liquid carbon dioxide.
