    Notes: Abstract In the summer of 1983, immature embryos from 101 selfed inbred lines and germplasm stocks of Zea mays L. were examined for their ability to produce callus cultures capable of plant regeneration (regenerable cultures) using a medium with which some limited success had previously been obtained. Forty-nine of the genotypes (49%) produced callus which visually appeared similar to callus previously cultured and shown to be capable of plant regeneration. After five months, 38 of these genotypes were alive in culture and plants were subsequently regenerated from 35 (92%) of them. No correlation was observed between plant regeneration and callus growth rate, the vivipary mutation (genes vp1, 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9), or published vigor ratings based on K+ uptake by roots. When F1 hybrid embryos were cultured, 97% of the hybrids having at least one regenerable parent also produced callus capable of plant regeneration. No regenerable cultures were obtained from any hybrid lacking a parent capable of producing a regenerable callus culture. In the summer of 1984, immature embryos from 218 additional inbred lines and germplasm stocks were plated and examined for their ability to produce regenerable callus cultures on media containing altered micronutrient concentrations, 3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid (dicamba), glucose, and elevated levels of vitamin-free casamino acids and thiamine. Of these genotypes 199 (91%) produced callus that was regenerable in appearance. In the 1984 study, plant regeneration was noted in many commercially important inbreds, including B73, Mo17, B84, A632, A634, Ms71, W117, H993H95 and Cm105. Thus tissue-culture techniques are now available to obtain callus cultures capable of plant regeneration from immature embryos of most maize genotypes.

    Notes: The effects of carbon dioxide-enriched air on the rate of zinc extraction during the microbiological leaching of a, high-grade zinc sulfide concentrate by Thiobacillns ferrooxidans have been studied. Under normal air-aeration conditions, the leach rate is limited initially by the availability of solid substrate surface area per unit volume of leach liquor, then by availability of carbon dioxide. If carbon dioxide-enriched air is supplied, along with excess substrate, the zinc extraction rate increases as the carbon dioxide content increases until some other, as yet unknown, factor becomes limiting.

    Notes: The leaching of a zinc sulfide concentrate by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was investigated in continuous stirred tank reactors. A mathematical model for the growth of T. ferrooxidans on this solid substrate is presented and tested. Experimental leaching studies were done using two reactors in series with and without recycle of solids from the outlet of the first reactor back to its inlet. The proposed model fits the authors' experimental data well. However, comparison of the parameters calculated with those calculated from the data of others showed that a wide variation can exist; thus, the parameters seem to depend on the nature of the substrate. The area occupied on the sulfide surface by a bacterium was found to be 5.4 μm2. The calculated maximum specific growth rates ranged from 0.20 to 0.31 h-1, and these values were dependent on whether they were observed in the first or second of the two reactors in series.

    Notes: A zinc sulfide concentrate was leached microbiologically by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in a continuous stirred tank reactor. A model was developed to predict, the leaching kinetics when the bacterial growth rate was not limited by any substrate other than the zinc concentrate, and it was modified to explain the observed results.Stable steady sates were obtained over a range of dilution rates from 0.0171 to 0.1038 hr-1. Because a solid substrate was used, the specific growth rate of the bacaeria was not a unique function of the subastrate concentration, and conventional contnuous culture theory based on the Monod equation did not apply to this system. The leaching rates and bacterial growth rates were first order in mineral surface area cocentration.
