Notes: The interaction of water with collagenous tissue was investigated using dynamic mechanical spectroscopy and cryogenic X-ray techniques. The loss spectrum was found to be very sensitive to water which is highly associated with the macromolecule. Two water-sensitive loss peaks were observed below 0°C: the β2 or “water dispersion” at 150°K and the β1 at 200°K which is attributed to motion of polar side chains. Changes in peak temperature and intensity were not continuous with water content, but exhibited regimes in behavior which were associated with two types of nonfreezable water, structural and bound water. In cryogenic X-ray experiments, specimens which contained some freezable water exhibited reflections identified with the cubic form of ice. These ice crystals underwent an irreversible transition to the more common hexagonal form when warmed above 200°K. On the basis of these experiments, a model for the hydration of native collagenous tissue was proposed.

Notes: The relaxation behaviour of the sodium salt of poly (L-glutamic acid) in the solid state has been examined by means of dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. Bound water was found to exert a profound influence on the relaxation behaviour and on a bulk property, the rigidity. Certain features of the loss spectrum have been identified with the hydration-dependent β-to-α conformational transition. Thus two side-chain relaxations are observed below ambient temperature, one associated with the β from (β1β) and a second at a lower temperature associated with the α form (β1α). The greater rigidity of the α form below the relaxation temperature and the larger rigidity drop accompanying the β1α can be explained in terms of the structural differences of the two conformations.

Notes: The effect of hydration on the solid-state conformation and relaxation behavior of the alkaline earth salts of poly (L-glutamic acid) has been examined. The calcium and strontium salts take the β-conformation and the magnesium salt takes the α-form. No hydration-dependent conformational transitions were observed. The amount of bound water, as measured by differential scanning calorimetry, appears to depend on the size of the cation, while conformation has little or no effect. A relative measure of the barrier to side-chain reorientation was obtained from the temperature of the side-chain (β1) relaxation. It was found that the barrier is determined by electrostatic forces and increases with increasing cation surface charge density. Side-chain motion also appears to be more hindered in the β-conformation than in the α-conformation.

Notes: High density polyethylene has been chlorinated by three different methods: in suspension and in solutions of two different solvents. Carbon-13 NMR and infrared analysis show that chlorination in chlorobenzene solution leads to statistically random distribution while chlorination in suspension gives highly blocky substitution. An intermediate distribution was obtained by chlorination in tetrachloroethane solution.

Notes: Chlorination of high density; polyethylene results in polymers which consist of unmodified methylene units and chlorinated methylene co-units. The effect of the concentration and distribution of chlorinated units on the solid state structure has been examined by thermal, wide angle X-ray diffraction and dynamic mechanical analysis. As the substitution becomes more random, the crystallinity, crystallite size, and crystalline perfection decrease for a given chlorine content. The chlorinated units are shown to be capable of co-crystallizing, and the concentration of chlorine in the crystalline phase increases as the distribution is made more random. Concurrently, the chlorine concentration of the amorphous phase decreases. Segregation of chlorine into the amorphous regions is most efficient when the substitution is blocky.

Notes: Fractography has been used in the post-failure analysis of single edge notched specimens of injection molded blends of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer (ABS). The mode of ductile tensile fracture of single edge notched specimens depended on comosition. Plane stress shear tearing was observed in the composition range PC/ABS 90/10 to 70/30 by weight where PC was the continuous phase. Intermediate compositions, PC/ABS 60/40 to 40/60, had a co-continuous or almot co-continuous phase morphology; these blends fractured by mixed mode pop-in, where a tunneling center crack relieved the triaxiality and permitted plane stress shear lips to form near the edges. Herringbone fracture, a plane strain mode characterized by discontinuous crack growth, was observed when ABS was the continuous phase, PC/ABS 30/70 to 10/90. An S-shaped relationship was observed between the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature and the composition. Addition of ABS to PC increased ductility up to PC/ABS 70/30 and 60/40, which were the most ductile compositions. Further addition of ABS decreased the ductility, and the least ductile compositions were PC/ABS 30/70 and 10/90.

Notes: A series of novel structured latex particles with interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) cores and glassy SAN shells were developed in an attempt to investigate the feasibility of these polymers as both toughening and damping agents in thermoplastics. The IPN cores were composed of one impact part (polybutadiene based) and one damping part (acrylic based, with Tg around +10°C). The particle morphologies of these polymers were determined by TEM. The glass transitions and mechanical behavior of the polymers were characterized from DMS. The effect of different components on the final core/shell particle morphologies and mechanical properties was studied. The mechanical behavior of core/shell particles with IPN cores was also compared with that of separate core/shell and multilayered core/shell particles. In addition, normal core/shell synthesis (rubbery part first then the glassy part) and inverted core/shell synthesis (glassy part first then the rubbery part) were performed to provide another access for morphology control. It was found that the core/shell latex particles with poly(butyl acrylate) based copolymers are more miscible than poly(ethylhexyl methacrylate)-based copolymers. The high grafting efficiency of poly(butyl acrylate) plays an important role in governing phase miscibility. The latex particles synthesized by the inverted core/shell mode showed higher miscibility than the normal synthesized ones. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The deformation of biaxially oriented polypropylene sheet produced by the BeXor process has been examined in terms of the hierarchical solid state structure described previously. The mechanical properties have been examined over a range of temperatures and strain rates. The anisotropic nature of uniaxial tensile deformation was analyzed from simultaneous measurements of longitudinal extension and lateral contraction in the width and thickness directions, by determining the shape of uniaxially deformed spherulites, and by examining fracture surfaces in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was determined that deformation proceeds by elastic extension of the amorphous network and plastic shear deformation of the crystalline regions in the plane of the sheet, and in the thickness dimension, by voiding with induced fibrillation. It is suggested that the property improvements, particularly at low temperatures and high strain rates, which are achieved by the BeXor process, result from changes in the hierarchical structure at the size scale of the crystalline lamellae. Specifically it appears that the small crystalline blocks formed by breakup and recrystallization of lamellae are more easily deformed than the original large coherent lamellae.

Notes: The crack growth behavior of polypropylene biaxially oriented by cross-rolling was studied at low temperature. Single edge notch testing produced a stable tearing type of crack growth in both 50% and 80% biaxially oriented polypropylene at -40°C, in contrast to the brittle fracture of unoriented polypropylene. The crack growth in the two oriented materials began slowly and accelerated to a constant rate that was higher in the 80% oriented material than in the 50% oriented material. The main difference between the crack growth behavior of the two was the longer period of initial slow growth in the case of 80% orientation. This period of slow growth corresponded to crack growth through the notch tip damage zone. Residual strength diagrams were used to present the crack growth data obtained when the stress state was intermediate between plane stress and plane strain. Fractography revealed large differences among the fracture surfaces of the three materials with the unoriented polypropylene showing a grainy appearance from the brittle fracture. The two oriented materials showed considerable ductility. The 50% oriented material showed many voids in the fracture surface, indicating that voiding during the fracture process contributed significantly to the toughness improvement. The 80% oriented polypropylene showed delamination crazing on the fracture surface with layered material and fibrils bridging the crazes.

Notes: A comparison of glass transition temperatures measured by differential scaning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) was made using mi9crolayer composites with many alternating layers of two polymers. What appeared to be a third transition at a temperature intermediate between the glass transitions of the two components was observ ed in DMTA but not DSC. The mechanical orgin of this intermediate damping peak in the layered composites was established. The viscoelastic properties of each polymer were modelled by a spring and dashpot in series, and the composite as a parallel arrangement of two Maxwell elements. It was shown that an anomalous damping peak can appear between the glass transition temperatures when the modulus of the composite can not drop below the modulus of the glassy layers, although the viscosity of the composite continues to be defined by the viscosity of the rubbery layers in this temperature range. The intermediate damping peak may be a general feature in the dynamic mechanical behavior of co-continuous multiphase systems including polymer blends and continuous fiber composites.
