    Notes: Abstract Photoautotrophic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum var. Wisconsin 38) cell cultures were gradually adapted to grow in media containing the normally inhibitory concentration of 20 g l−1 NaCl. Both salt-adapted cultures maintained in 20 g l−1 NaCl (P20) and salt-unadapted (P0) cultures demonstrated similar chloroplast morphology and similar growth characteristics on a dry weight basis, but P20 cells showed reduced growth on a fresh weight basis compared to P0 cells. Compared to P0 cells, intracellular sucrose levels were significantly higher in P20 cells while starch levels in P0 cells were significantly higher than in P20 cells. Levels of intracellular and extracellular reducing sugars, and chlorophyll accumulated to the same degree in P20 and P0 cells, but accumulation was delayed by approximately 13 days in P20 cells. O2 evolution and14[CO2] fixation was more resistant to inhibition by NaCl in P20 cells than in P0 cells. However, significant changes in the abundance of thylakoid membrane proteins could not be demonstrated between P20 and P0 cells although higher levels of Rubisco on a per milligram chlorophyll basis were observed in P0 compared to P20 chloroplasts.

    Notes: A model has been proposed for the condition of incipient fluidization in a centrifugal fluidized bed. The model is based on the balance between the overall forces, including the centrifugal and fluid frictional forces, exerted on the fluidized particles and the overall effective weight of the particles. Equations have been derived from the model for predicting the critical fluidizing velocity and the maximum pressure differential (or pressure drop) through the centrifugal bed. A series of experiments was carried out with different solid particles, bed rotational speeds, and bed heights. The resultant data for the critical fluidizing velocity and the maximum pressure drop of the bed indicate that the proposed model is valid and the derived equations are of practical use.

    Notes: Thermal gasification has been proposed as one technical option for the conversion of coal to gaseous fuels and/or chemicals to supplement supplies presently derived from petroleum and natural gas. In the present study, a bench-scale fluidized bed reactor was used for the gasification of coal with steam as the fluidizing medium. A mixture of sand and limestone used as the bed material made it possible to gasify a caking coal without the problem of agglomeration. The gas composition and yield of the hydrogen-rich product gas were studied as a function of temperature.To study the heterogeneous reactions taking place in the reactor and also the transient behavior of the system, a mathematical model was developed. The model assumed a reaction mechanism that accounted for the devolatilization of coal, cracking of volatiles, char gasification, and the water-gas shift reaction. Both the dynamic behavior and steady state performance of the gasifier were simulated based on the model. The steady state results of the simulation were compared with the experimental data. This comparison enabled us to ascertain that the proposed reaction mechanism and dynamic model predicted the correct trends.

    Notes: The anionic solution polymerization of butadiene was studied employing both batch and continuous reactor operations with n-butyllithium (n-BuLi) initiator, tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) modifier, and hexane solvent. A model was proposed that described the kinetics as a function of both the fully modified and unmodified regressed rate data. Using the proposed kinetic model, the conversion, vinyl structure, and heterogeneity index of polymers produced for a series of continuous runs were successfully predicted. The model was used to simulate several process configurations.

Reactor conversion, molecular weight distribution, and polymer glass transition temperature had been calculated from the model and compared favorably to actual data for various combinations of reactor system and operating conditions. Simulations of the models can be used to design reactor systems, and predict polymer properties of a large-scale operation from results of small-scale batch reactor runs. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The new technique of measuring radial expansion of a crater as a function of time on a shaped charge jet that penetrates water is explained in this paper. Radial expansion of the crater in the frame of experimentation can, in this case, be easily described with a modified Bernoulli equation under the condition that target strength is weak, the initial radial crater velocity is equal to the axial crater velocity and that the pressure p diminishes from the initial impact pressure p0, with the ratio of the area a to the initial area a0 of the impacting jet.
