Notizen: Stress relaxation experiments were carried out in a dry nitrogen atmosphere on polydimethylsiloxane and an ethylene-propylene terpolymer. Relaxation times much longer than expected were observed, and plots of In f(t)/f(0) versus time were linear in all cases.

Notizen: Castor oil was polymerized and crosslinked with sulfur or diisocyanates to form the vulcanized and urethane derivatives, respectively. Both types were swollen with a plastic-forming monomer plus crosslinker, and a second polymerization was carried out in situ. Polyblends were also made by emulsion polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate employing hydrolyzed castor oil as the soap. In all three polymerizations, a wide range of compositions was obtained. The resulting interpenetrating polymer networks were characterized using electron microscopy, modulus-temperature measurements, and stress-strain analysis. The polystyrene phase size of the castor oil-urethane/polystyrene IPN was shown to decrease with increased crosslinking of the castor oil component and with increased polystyrene contents. The modulus-temperature study showed two distinct glass transitions in all cases, with evidence of significant mixing of the two components in many cases. The stress-strain results show that some of the IPN's behave as reinforced, highly extensible elastomers at low polystyrene levels, and a rubber-toughened plastics at high levels of polystyrene or crosslinking.

Notizen: In previous papers, interpenetrating polymer networks were shown to display a cellular structure. The phase domain size of polymer II was shown to depend inversely on the crosslink density of polymer I. The present paper presents a semiempirical derivation of equations which show quantitatively the dependence of the phase domain size of polymer II on the crosslinking density of polymer I, and also on the interfacial energy and the overall composition. If polymer II is linear, the dependence on the molecular weight of polymer II is also included. The values of the phase domain sizes so estimated are compared with experimental results. While theory and experiment yield good agreement, the semiempirical nature of the equations must be borne in mind.

Notizen: Reticulated polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PSt-DVB) copolymer membranes or thin sheets were prepared using two different methods. The first method employed a nonsolvating diluent which dissolves the monomer but precipitates the polymer. This resulted in skinned membranes with the skin being nonporous, being either crenelated or smooth. The second method used paraffin wax as the inert phase. The wax was precipitated by cooling, followed by polymerization of the styrene. The wax was then solvent extracted. This resulted in a reticulated structure both on the surface and in the interior of the membrane. The resulting products from the two methods were compared using scanning electron microscopy. The objective of this study was to prepare a skinless, macroporous, crosslinked polystyrene, as polymer I for the preparation of novel interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) materials.

Notizen: Areas under the linear tan δ-temperature (tA) and linear loss modulus-temperature (LA) curves of the polyacrylate and polymethacrylate homologous series and their interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) were investigated. For poly(methyl acrylate), LA values are independent of crosslinking level through 25%, but tA decreases. With increasing side group length, on the other hand, tA remains nearly independent of side group length for both homologous series, having values near 50 and 65 (units of K) for the acrylate and methacrylate series, respectively. However, LA decreases steeply with increasing side group length. A phenomenological treatment of areas is presented in order to explain tA and LA behavior semiquantitatively. Both tA and LA exhibit areas characteristic of the structure of the particular polymers. The homopolymer LA areas are additive in determining the area under the corresponding curve for the IPN. This suggested a group contribution analysis for LA, where each moiety contributes specific values to the area.

Notizen: Novel acrylic/methacrylic interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) were examined by dynamic mechanical spectroscopy for their damping capabilities. While simple homopolymers exhibit high damping properties only over a 20-30°C range, multicomponent polymer systems with controlled degree of miscibility, such as IPNs, may exhibit high damping properties over temperature ranges as broad as approximately 100°C. Two series of IPNs based on poly(n-butyl acrylate) and poly(n-butyl methacrylate) were synthesized and the dynamic mechanical properties were investigated using a Rheovibron. Graphite was incorporated into the poly(n-butyl acrylate) homopolymer and a few IPNs to measure the change in the damping properties. For important IPN compositions, tan δ values between 0.4 and 0.85 were observed over a 75°C plus temperature range. Graphite increased the damping properties of poly(n-butyl acrylate) and the IPNs, as indicated by the tan δ values.

Notizen: The homopolymers, poly(3,3-bisethoxymethyl oxetane) (polyBEMO), poly(3,3-bisazidomethyl oxetane) (polyBAMO), and triblock copolymers based on these homopolymers and a statistical copolymer center block composed of BAMO and 3-azidomethyl-3-methyl oxetane AMMO were synthesized and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, modulus-temperature, optical microscopy, membrane osmometry, and solution and melt viscosity. The values of K and a for the Mark-Houwink equation were found to be 7.29 × 10-3 mL/g and 0.80, respectively, for polyBEMO at 25°C using number-average molecular weights. Glass transition temperatures were in the range -25 to -40°C and melting temperatures were between 65 and 90°C for all polymers. The melting temperature was found to increase as expected with molecular weight. Melt viscosities of triblock copolymers with polyBAMO end blocks were at least an order of magnitude lower than those with polyBEMO end blocks and clear optically, suggesting that the polyBAMO-based triblock copolymers formed one phase in the melt, while the polyBEMO-based triblock materials (milk white) phase separated. The addition of filler raised the melt viscosity to a level between that predicted by the Guth-Smallwood and the Mooney equations.

Notizen: A series of novel structured latex particles with interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) cores and glassy SAN shells were developed in an attempt to investigate the feasibility of these polymers as both toughening and damping agents in thermoplastics. The IPN cores were composed of one impact part (polybutadiene based) and one damping part (acrylic based, with Tg around +10°C). The particle morphologies of these polymers were determined by TEM. The glass transitions and mechanical behavior of the polymers were characterized from DMS. The effect of different components on the final core/shell particle morphologies and mechanical properties was studied. The mechanical behavior of core/shell particles with IPN cores was also compared with that of separate core/shell and multilayered core/shell particles. In addition, normal core/shell synthesis (rubbery part first then the glassy part) and inverted core/shell synthesis (glassy part first then the rubbery part) were performed to provide another access for morphology control. It was found that the core/shell latex particles with poly(butyl acrylate) based copolymers are more miscible than poly(ethylhexyl methacrylate)-based copolymers. The high grafting efficiency of poly(butyl acrylate) plays an important role in governing phase miscibility. The latex particles synthesized by the inverted core/shell mode showed higher miscibility than the normal synthesized ones. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
