Description / Table of Contents: Comparative examinations on gold layers applied on silver. By electrolytical deposition, high vacuum evaporation and cladding gold layers of 10-20 μm thickness had been produced on silver. These layers had been examined in their initial state and after different heat treatments on air by a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The microhardness of these layers had also been determined and the diffusion between gold and silver had been studied with the electron microanalyzer. Besides the known features of surface structure and hardness certain differences in the tarnishing and diffusion behaviour had been detected. The cause of these differentiations is primarily due to typical processing features.

Description / Table of Contents: The detection of thin contaminated layers on contact surfaces.Today electrical contacts must satisfy requirements which are growing steadily. The detection of very thin contaminated layers at contact surfaces therefore becomes very important. Clad gold contacts were contaminated with very small amounts of Zink. Contact resistance measurements and surface analysis measurements by AES and SIMS were shown to be adequate for the detection of this surface contamination.

Notes: Investigations are reported on the creep and creep fracture behaviour of three heat resistant steels under carburising conditions. The material has been tested either under continuous carburisation or in a precarburised state. The chosen testing conditions are primarily related to ethylene production but the results enable the description in a more general way of carburisation-creep interaction.

Notes: The Mooney theory for stress relaxation of polymer materials has been numerically evaluated in unmodified and modified forms. The modified expressions include such effects as molecular weight distributions and entanglement or polymer interaction distributions. The relaxation behavior was found to be highly dependent upon the number of interaction points per chain molecule particularly for small numbers. The distributions in molecular sizes and in the number of interaction points have a much smaller effect on the shapes of the relaxation curves. A comparison of the theoretical stress relaxation behavior is made with birefringence relaxation data. The region of correlation indicates a number of five interaction points per molecule of polystyrene at 10 wt. % in benzene.
