Notes: Pressure-volume-temperature measurements have been made on methyl borate over the temperature range of 2257deg; to 300°C. and pressures of 30 to 200 atm. in a variable volume P-V-T bomb. Vapor-pressure measurements from 180°C. to the critical point have also been made with the same apparatus. The vapor-pressure data are presented in the form of the Antoine equation, and the P-V-T data together with the vapor-pressure data have been fitted to the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state.

Notes: A method of estimating enthalpies of mixtures of light hydrocarbons is presented. Enthalpes so obtained are consistent with equilibrium-vaporization constants that have been correlated with the composition characterization factor, the molal average boiling point (M.A.B.P.).Values of the isothermal-pressure corrections to the enthalpy of ideal gas mixtures (H° — H) are presented on three plots with parameters of temperature, pressure, and molal-average boiling point. Pressures range from zero to 1,500 lb./sq. in. abs., temperatures from -200° to 500°F., and M.A.B.P. from -200° to 150°F.

Notes: The adsorption of methane from mixtures of methane and hydrogen on fixed beds of activated carbon at -115°F. and 1 atm. has been studied. Inlet gas concentrations of 5.69, 7.58, and 10.65 mole % methane in hydrogen were employed over a gas flow rate range of from 3.24 to 16.3 std. cu. ft./hr. Activated carbon in sizes of 4 × 6 and 6 × 16 mesh and as 1/8- and 3/16-in. pellets were employed as adsorbent. The external diffusion of adsorbate to the surface can be correlated by the usual mass transfer expressions for packed beds, although coefficients obtained in this work are lower than those reported for other systems in the literature.A new equation is presented for internal particle diffusion.

Notes: The P-V-T-x properties of binary gas mixtures and their dependence on reduced temperature and pressure have been reviewed in detail.A modified form of Kay's original method for estimating P-V-T-x properties of mixtures is suggested for purposes of engineering calculations.

Notes: The kinetics of physical adsorption of propane from helium on fixed beds of activated alumina at 30°C. and at atmospheric pressure was studied. Two grades of activated alumina with the same average pore size distribution but different pore size distributions were used. Gas concentration, flow rate, and adsorbent particle size were also varied. The rate of internal diffusion controlled the adsorption process and was best described by Ficks' equation for unsteady state diffusion into a sphere. The internal diffusion appeared to be by a pore diffusion rather than by a surface diffusion mechanism.

Notes: The physical adsorption and desorption of argon and nitrogen on fixed beds of 18 × 20 mesh silica gel at -78.5°C. and 1 atm. have been studied. Binary mixtures containing 5.52, 10.34, 51.0, 90.16, 95.13 mole % nitrogen, as well as pure argon and pure nitrogen, were used. Superficial gas velocities were varied from 0.10 to 0.27 ft./sec. Concentration vs. time curves were obtained at bed depths of 5.3, 8.6, and 12.0 in.Resistance to mass transfer from the gas stream to the outside surface of the particles was found to be negligible. The rate is limited due to mass transfer from the outside surface to the internal surface of the particle. The data were correlated by the integrated Rosen diffusion solution with D = 9.60 (10-8) sq.ft./sec. or alternatively, by the Hiester and Vermeulen integrated model with kp = 0.23 sec.-1.

Notes: Although a considerable amount of work has been done on the compressibility of n-hexane, it has been impossible until now to compare or evaluate the work of the various investigators. There has also been a serious lack of information in the region above the critical temperature. It is the purpose of this work to make an extensive study of temperatures of 240° to 300°C. and of pressures up to 225 atm. in order to provide the lacking information and to overlap with the work of other investigators so that a proper evaluation of their work may be made.
