    Notes: The present state of the theory of nonisothermal tube flow is inadequate to predict the behavior of polymer melts. In addition, relatively few experimental measurements on radial temperature profiles of polymer melts in the tube flow have been reported. For non-Newtonian systems, the separation of viscous losses due to frictional heat generation and those due to the effect of shear rate is a formidable problem which has hampered progress. This paper will describe a method of measuring shear induced heating and present experimental data on radial temperature profiles in tube flow. A novel method of estimating the velocity profile is also described.

    Notes: The previous description1 of highly oriented films of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) is augmented by close packing energy calculations and quantitative analysis of layer line intensity profiles observed via electron diffraction. The chain axial translational disorder is of the paracrystalline type: partial registration of chains occurs within the (100) layers while the layers themselves are randomly shifted from one another along the chain direction.

    Notes: Blends of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), with other polymers were made by film-casting from an aqueous mixture of the water-soluble sulfonium salt precursor to PPV and the second polymer. The rates of chemical doping, using As F5, and of electrochemical doping, using perchlorate counter ion, of the PPV component are strongly influenced by the nature of the added macromolecule. In all cases studied the blends appear to be phase separated under all conditions. The most versatile blend was with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), which could be heated to 225°C without degradation and which yielded the highest electrical conductivity when doped. The utility of blends was demonstrated using free-standing PPV/PEO blend samples as rechargeable battery electrodes.

    Notes: Solid-state 2H quadrupole echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and measurements of 2H spin lattice relaxation times have been obtained for films of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) deuterated in phenylene ring positions (PPV-d4). NMR line shapes show that all the phenylene rings of PPV undergo 180° rotational jumps about the 1,4 ring axis (“ring flips”) at 225°C. The temperature dependence of the 2H line shapes show that the jump motion is thermally activated, with a median activation energy, Ea = 15 kcal/mol, and a distribution of activation energies of less than ±2 kcal/mol. The jump rate was also determined from the magnitude of the anisotropic T2 relaxation associated with 2H line shapes and from the curvature of inversion recovery intensity data. The experimental activation energy for jumps is comparable to the intramolecular potential barrier for rotation about phenylene vinylene bonds. 2H NMR provides a method for determining the phenylene-vinylene rotational barrier in pristine PPV, and may potentially be used to study conjugation in conducting films.

    Notes: Thermally stimulated creep compliance, differential scanning calorimetric behavior, thermal degradation, AC dielectric permittivity and loss (between 120 Hz and 100 kHz) and thermally stimulated polarization and aepolarization currents were studied in a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin (B), in a conventional bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ester type epoxy resin (C) and in composites consisting of: resin B/wollastonite (B/W), resin B/quartz (B/Q) and resin C/wollastonite (C/W). The filler content was 60 wt%. Resin B exhibited higher Tg and lower rubbery deformability than resin C due to its more compact structure. Fillers reduced the rubbery deformation and thermal expansion and shifted the transition temperatures by a few degrees. The shift depended on the method used. Composites B/W and C/W exhibited higher thermal stability than the corresponding pure resins, while sample B/Q was less stable than resin B. Resins B and C exhibited a low temperature β transition (in the case of resin B a doublet) and a high temperature α or glass transition. AC dielectric losses were fairly similar in samples B and B/W, while the high temperature loss of sample B/Q was determined by a space charge process probably due to the matrix/filler interface. In samples C and C/W the α transition is visible but it is superposed on a strong space charge process due to the resin/electrode interface. Thermally stimulated currents show a behavior qualitatively in agreement with the AC results but the very low effective frequency and the nonlinear field strength dependence of the space charge processes cause some minor differences.
