Notizen: Two-component interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) of the SIN type (simultaneous interpenetrating networks) were prepared from three different polyurethanes and two epoxies. The linear prepolymers were combined in solution, together with crosslinking agents and catalysts, films cast, and subsequently chain extended and crosslinked in situ. Two of the IPN's showed significant improvement in thermal resistance, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). All of the IPN's showed maxima in tensile strength significantly higher than the tensile strengths of the component networks at 25% polyurethane and minima at 75% polyurethane. The minima were explained by an initial dilution of the strong polyurethane hydrogen bonds by the epoxies, and the maxima, by an increase in crosslink density due to interpenetration.

Notizen: The influence of chemical structure on mechanical properties of polyurethane ionomers (PU ionomers) has been examined. NCO-terminated prepolymers prepared from primarily 4,4-methylene bis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) and poly(oxytetramethylene) glycol (PTMO) were chain extended with tertiary amine-containing diols and the ionomers obtained by quaternization of the prepolymers. The N-methyldiethanolamine chain extender gave the best physical properties. The mechanical properties of the PU ionomers were improved with decreasing chain length of PTMO and with increasing concentration of quaternary ammonium centers (or NCO/OH ratio of PU prepolymers). A lower degree of quaternization resulted in a decrease in the mechanical properties of the resulting PU ionomers, but their properties could be improved by post-quaternization. The adhesion of the PU ionomers to aluminum and the glass transition temperature increased with increasing concentration of quaternizing centers.

Notizen: Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of polyurethanes and epoxies were prepared by the simultaneous technique. Modifications of the polymer structures resulted in a series of IPNs exhibiting semimiscible behavior, as evidenced by broad glass transitions in the dynamic mechanical spectra. Since this indicates materials with potentially good sound attenuation properties as a function of temperature and frequency, foams were prepared from these IPN systems. Enhanced sound absorption occurred in these foams when measured using the impedance tube method.

Notizen: Polyurethane (PU) cationomers have been synthesized by quaternizing tertiary amine-containing linear polyurethanes using different quaternizers containing acid groups. The effect of chemical structure of PU cationomers on the physical properties was studied. The mechanical properties of PU cationomers were improved with decreasing molecular weight of poly(caprolactone) glycol, and increasing concentration of quaternary ammonium. Decreasing the carbon number in the alkyl group of the N-alkyl diethanol-amine chain-extenders, and using rigid symmetrical diisocyanates, the mechanical properties of the PU cationomers were increased. The effects of these factors on the glass transition temperature of PU cationomers were also examined. The mechanical properties of the PU cationomers decreased by immersion in water and recovered after removal of the water.

Notizen: The influence of mono and divalent nontransition and transition metals on the glass transition and mechanical properties of polyurethane anionomers have been investigated. NCO-terminated prepolymer prepared from 4,4′-methylene-bis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) and poly(caprolactone) glycol (PCL) was chain extended with dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), and the anionomers obtained by neutralization of the prepolymer. The glass transition temperatures of polyurethane anionomers have been studied as a function of the counterion. From simple electrostatic considerations, it is shown that a linear relationship exists between the glass transition temperature and ionic potential (φ) for these particular materials. The relation is; Tg = Aφ + B. The mechanical properties are greatly affected by the type of the counterion, and in some cases, such as monovalent and nontransition metals, the mechanical properties of the anionomers improved by increasing the ionic potential. On the other hand, transition metals containing anionomers exhibited good mechanical properties but no relationship was observed between the mechanical properties and the ionic potential. The extent of water absorption of PU anionomers follows the same relative trends as the tensile strengths of the transition metals with filled and partially filled d-orbitals.

Notizen: We report the synthesis and characterization of interpentrating polymer networks (IPN's), pseudo INPN's, and blends of urethane-containing aliphatic polycarbonates (PCU) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The simultaneous full IPN's of PCU's and PMMA over the whole composition range have only one Tg, as determined by DSC and DMA which, together with transmission electron microscopy observations, suggest a single phase morphology even though the linear chain blends are completely immiscible. The full IPN's exhibit a maximum tensile strength at a certain composition, and superior solvent and heat resistance as compared to the pseudo IPN's, linear blends, and the pure crosslinked PCU's and PMMA.

Notizen: Interpenetrating polymer networks of the SIN type (simultaneous interpenetrating networks) composed of a polyacrylate and a polyurethane were prepared. They were made by mixing several concentrations of the linear polymer and prepolymer in solution, together with their respective chain extending and crosslinking agents and catalysts, casting films and curing them in situ. The morphology was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and electron microscopy in order to determine the extent of chain entanglement of the two networks (interpenetration). It was found that little or no phase separation occurred, thus implying extensive interpenetration.

Notizen: Two component interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) of the SIN type (simultaneous interpenetrating networks), composed of a polystyrene network (crosslinked with divinyl benzene) and a polyester-polyurethane network (crosslinked with trimethylolpropane), were made. Electron microscopy and glass-transition measurements showed that phase separation had resulted with some interpenetration, presumably occurring at the boundaries. At a composition of about 75 percent polyurethane, a phase inversion occurred, the continuous phase being polystyrene at polyurethane compositions of less than 75 percent. The stress-strain properties and hardness measurements agreed with these results. Enhanced tensile strength was observed in the IPN's in a concentration range where modulus reinforcement was not evident. A small enhancement in tear strength and thermal stability was also noted.
