Description / Table of Contents: Deterioration of timber in cooling towers. Possible causesTimber in cooling towers is always exposed to exacting working conditions and shows many signs of deterioration. In order to clarify two specific cases of deterioration, the timber of cooling towers (redwood and fir) has been subjected to mechanical tests for loss of mechanical strength whilst the cooling water and circulating water have been analyzed. It was found that alkaline water with iron content causes a marked loss of mechanical strength and that the impregnation of the wood with tar oils has a very great protective effect as it inhibits the corrosion caused by iron nails.

Notes: The proton magnetic resonance spectra have been measured between 4°K and their melting points for solid ortho, meta and para xylenes. It is found that lattices of these xylenes become rigid at about 4.2°K. The internal rotation of CH3 groups is observed at all temperatures above 95°K causing spectral narrowing.

Notes: Broad line NMR investigations on solid L-alanine have been carried out over the temperature range 77°K to 493°K. A comparison between the observed and theoretical values of the second moment has been made, to provide check on the crystal structure and to study the molecular motions. Investigations reveal the presence of NH3 group motion at about 230°K. The activation energy for NH3 group rotation has been computed to be 7.19 ± 1.0 kcal/mole. The crystal lattice remains rigid below 230°K. There is a possibility of torsional oscillation of the CH3 group at about 352°K.

Notes: Wide line NMR investigation of solid phloroglucinol has been made over the temperature range 77 °K to 400 °K at the radio frequency 7.5 Mc/s. It has been shown that the second moments (mean square width) of the spectra for the temperatures at which the lattice is effectively rigid, namely below 290 °K are consistent with the assumed model of phloroglucinol, thereby giving an NMR check of the molecular structure of the sample. The rotation of the molecule is observed at all temperatures above 290 °K and the correlation frequencies for molecular reorientation are found to be in excess of 105 Hz. The activation energy is found to be 23.04 kcal/mole.

Notes: Broad line NMR investigations of solid p-amino benzoic acid reveal the presence of intramolecular motion in solid state. The spectra were recorded in the temperature range from 77°K to the melting point of the sample (459°K). A transition was observed at about 330°K. From the temperature dependence of the second moment, this transition has been assigned to the rotation of the NH2 group about the C—N bond.
