Pure anhydrous yellow copper(II) chloride has been prepared in almost quantitative yield by interaction between HCl or acetyl chloride and Cu(II)-ions in absolute acetic acid.Similarly, anhydrous black copper(II) bromide has been obtained, whereas in the case of iodide only copper(I) iodide is formed.The thermal decomposition of the copper(II) halogenides and their hydrates is discussed in regard to the observation that both CuCl2 and CuBr2 are decomposed to the corresponding copper(I) salts on heating them in a mixture of acetic acid with more than 50 vol-% of acetic anhydride.

Die Einwirkung von Chlorwasserstoff oder Acetylchlorid auf Cu(II)-Ionen in wasserfreier Essigsäure führt mit mehr als 97proz. Ausbeute zum gelben, wasserfreien Kupfer(II)-chlorid. Dieses ist als frische Fällung befähigt, Lösungsmittel wie Äther oder Benzol einzuschließen und wird als die reine, von basischen Anteilen freie Form des CuCl2 angesehen.In analoger Umsetzung ist das schwarze, wasserfreie Kupfer(II)-bromid zugänglich während mit Acetyljodid nur Kupfer(I)-jodid resultiert.Die thermische Zersetzung der Hydrate und wasserfreien Halogenide wird diskutiert im Zusammenhang mit der Beobachtung, daß CuCl2 und CuBr2, bei Anwesenheit von mehr als 50Vol.-% Essigsäureanhydrid in der Siedehitze schnell zu den entsprechenden Kupfer(I)-Halogeniden abgebaut werden.
