A sensitive analytical method involving isotope dilution analysis with multilabeled standards and using field ionization mass spectrometry has been developed for the determination of methaqualone and its metabolie, 6-hydroxymethaqualone, in urine. The limit of sensitivity measured with urine samples is 200 pg/ml for the two compounds. Analysis of urines collected over 11 days following ingestion of a single 250 mg tablet of Mandrax™ by a human subject indicates that the slow phase of excretion of the two compounds has a half-life approximately 50 h long.
