Notes: A potentially simple and effective technique is proposed for separating enantiomorphic crystal pairs from each other, or separating individual enantiomorphs from optically active impurities. This method consists essentially of settling under conditions controlling orientation of the asymmetric particles and taking advantage of the tensorial nature of their friction factors.

Notes: A method is developed for predicting rates of gas absorption into laminar rippling films in terms of the surface velocities. The description is an extension of the surface-stretch model of mass transfer (1) and is therefore useful for cases of high Peclet number. The description can be used with any of the presently known hydrodynamic models of rippling films and with any future models which may be developed, provided they satisfy two relatively nonrestrictive conditions: (1) the ripples are of a two dimensional nature, being of constant thickness in the direction normal to their direction of propagation, and having no velocity components in this transverse direction; and (2) the ripples propagate at constant celerity and with constant shape. It can be used for both traveling and standing waves and can be extended to describe the effects of high net-mass transfer rates and combined diffusion and chemical reaction.

Notes: Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the oxidation-reduction behavior of a series of novel hexacoordinate silicon(IV) porphyrin complexes. Each (Por)SiX2 [Por = the dianions of the porphyrins: tetrakis(p-tolyl)porphyrin (TTP), tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP), tetrakis(p-trifluoromethylphenyl)porphyrin (TTFP), octaethylporphyrin (OEP), × = F, Cl, O3SCF3] complex undergoes one to two oxidations and one to two reductions, all occurring at the porphyrin ring. No silicon(IV) reduction is observed for any of the porphyrin complexes. The effects of solvent, supporting electrolyte, substituents on the porphyrin ring, axial ligands, certral metal, and ruffling of the porphyrin ring are described.

Notes: This study provides electrochemical and LCEC determination for three of the most abundant and most important isoflavones, Biochanin A, formononetin, and genistein. Cyclic voltammetry and pH-potential diagrams show that the isoflavones undergo pH-dependent irreversible oxidations. The LCEC determination of the isoflavones has been optimized for mobile phase composition and detection potential. Sub-nanogram detection limits have been achieved.

Notes: A spectroelectrochemical detector for flow injection and liquid chromatography is described. The detector design has dimensions of a standard 1 cm sample cuvette with a replaceable reticulated vitreous carbon working electrode. No special cell holder or modifications to the spectrophotometer are required to use the detector. Chronocoulometry is used to indicate a trend from thin-layer behavior toward semi-infinite diffusion behavior as the electrode pore size increases. Ferro-/ferricyanide solutions were used to evaluate the flow injection characteristics of the detector. A sampling rate of 180 injections per hour was used. Linear calibration curves in the micromolar range were achieved with a reproducibility of 2-7%. A mixture of phenol, chlorophenols, and nitrophenols was used to investigated the simultaneous electrochemical and optical response for liquid chromatography.

Notes: Many techniques are available for the determination of diffusion coefficients of ions in aqueous solutions. A review of classical and modern techniques is presented. Non-electrochemical methods are discussed briefly. Electrochemical methods reviewed include chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, polarography, and hydrodnamics. Selected values of the diffusion coefficients determined by these electrochemical methods of the metallic ions AgI, BiIII, CdII, CuII InIII, PbII, TlI, and ZnII are presented.

Notes: The diffusion coefficient values of GaIII in potassium nitrate and potassium chloride supporting electrolytes have been obtained polarographically. The half-wave potential, E1/2, and E3/4-E1/4 values have also been determined. The E3/4 - E1/4 values confirm the irreversibility of GaIII reduction in KNO3 and KCl electrolytes.

Notes: A review of the development and application of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy for in situ structural characterization of chemical processes at he electrode surface is presented. The designs of the in situ electrochemical cells developed to date are shown. Applications are presented from the areas of metal passivation, spectroelectrochemistry, modified electrodes, underpotential deposition, and adsorption.
