Notes: Syntheses of various combinations of composite particles were carried out employing PVC-based latices, PVC, PVC-VAc and PVC-VD, as seed particles. Monomers for seed polymerization were chosen so that the solubility in water and the compatibility with seed polymer may influence the features of products. MMA, whose coverage improves the flow characteristics of PVC plastisols to a great extent, was most investigated along with MMA-ST, BMA, and ST. Smaller monomerpolymer feed ratio (M/P), smaller seed size, and the employment of monomers sparsely soluble in water were the key factors in preventing the nucleation of secondary particles during the seed polymerization. A quantitative correlation to evaluate how effectively monomer is converted for the formation of composite particles was proposed. Analyses by means of the electron microscopy (TEM and SEM), GPC, DSC, and TLC strongly anticipated the development of IPN structure and the formation of graft linkage between PVC-VAc core and PMMA.

Notes: An experimental study of semi-continuous emulsion copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and styrene (ST) was carried cut with an isothermal stirred vessel. Continuous addition of monomer emulsion (ME) was inserted between preliminary and finishing batch operations. A mathematical model to simulate the experimental results was also developed with a particular attention on the partition of hydrophilic AN between the aqueous and organic phases. The result of simulation was quite satisfactory even though the approximate rate expressions proposed by Szabo and Nauman (1) were employed.

Notes: The separation of the geometric isomers of chromium and rhodium chelates of trifluoroacetylacetone and thenoyltrifluor-oacetone was investigated using packed column supercritical fluid chromatography. Mobile phases consisting of neat and alcohol-modified carbon dioxide were used, and the most favorable isomeric resolution was obtained with a phenyl stationary phase. The chromatographic performance was better for chelates with trifluoroacetylacetone than for the corresponding chelates with thenoyltrifluoroacetone. Chromatographic peak area analysis of the metal chelates investigated showed appropriate isomeric concentrations in the final diastereomeric products resulting from the synthetic procedures.

Notes: The chromatographic behaviors of lanthanide chelates of acetylacetone (ACAC), trifluoroacetylacetone (TFA), thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA), dipivaloylmethane (THD), 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedione (FOD), and the thenoyltrifluoroacetonepyridine (TTA·Py) adduct were investigated using packed column supercritical fluid chromatography. Mobile phases consisting of neat and alcohol modified CO2 were used with a phenyl packed stationary phase. Lanthanide complexes of ACAC, THD, and FOD were shown to have better chromatographic performance compared to the corresponding chelates with TFA, TTA, and TTA·Py. In particular, TTA complexes such as Eu(TTA)3 showed characteristic thermal decomposition in the mobile phase at elevated temperature. In addition, retention behavior was found to be a temperature dependent function of volatility and solubility for all chelates studied.

Notes: The persistence length of lugworm cuticle collagen in 0.1M acetic acid was evaluated as 1600 ∼ 1800 Å by Yamakawa-Fujii's model for a wormlike chain from the sedimentation constant and the intrinsic viscosity. The persistence length was further examined for a series of sample “collagen sonicates” produced by varying the duration of sonic irradiation. To estimate the salt effect on the persistence length, measurements were made over a range of NaCl concentrations from 0 to 0.1M. The results showed that the cuticle collagen and collagen sonicates had identical values of persistence length and that the neutral salt effect for the cuticle collagen was far smaller than that for DNA.

Notes: Polystyrene microspheres with a small amount of acrylic acid (200 : 1) incorporated were synthesized by nonaqueous phase dispersion (NAD) polymerization to investigate the feasibility of use as a carrier for immobilized enzyme. Seeded emulsion polymerization was then carried out to obtain larger cross-linked polystyrene spheres, the structure of which was expected to yield a favorable environment to keep the original activity of the immobilized enzyme. Glucoamylase, a particular enzyme catalyzing the hydrolysis of oligosaccharides to glucose, was immobilized through peptide bonding using a carbodiimide activating agent. Thirty percent of the enzyme activity at maximum was retained relative to free glucoamylase. The immobilized enzyme remained active after 4 months, although its poor resistance to heat was not improved. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Application of the particulate microporous glass membrane (SPG) was extended to the synthesis of fairly monodisperse poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres. Hydrophilic monomers have been believed to yield polymer particles of a broad size distribution when the SPG technique was employed. This difficulty was overcome by adopting the droplet swelling technique. The primary uniform emulsion composed of a mixture of hydrophobic diluent (and/or monomer), cosurfactant, and initiator was prepared with an SPG membrane and was allowed to absorb MMA (and diluent) under the principle of the degradative diffusion process from droplets in the secondary emulsion. The coefficient of variation of PMMA spheres was around 10%. Porous PMMA spheres possessing up to 185 m2/g of specific surface area were obtained as well as one-eyed spheres and smooth and solid spheres. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A computer modeling concept was developed to deal with multicomponent emulsion copolymerization systems. Based on the model, a simulating program called NSBEC (n-component, semibatch emulsion copolymerization) was prepared., NSBEC is capable of carrying out a variety of operations involving any number of monomers with different modes of ingredient feed. In this paper, first the basic concept of the model is explained, then several applications to the actual experimental systems (e.g., acrylonitrile-vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate-butyl acrylate, and methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) are discussed. Finally, the probable control of copolymer composition by means of the semibatch operation based on NSBEC is proposed. The authors expect that use of NSBEC can substantially reduce the number of experimental runs previously required to describe the system.

Notes: Relatively uniform polymeric microspheres, the coefficients of variation being close to 10%, were obtained by the BPO-initiated suspension polymerization of styrenic monomers. Unlike the conventional stirred-tank system, a particular microporous glass membrane (SPG) provided uniform monomer droplets continuously when monomer was allowed to permeate through the micropores. The monomer droplets were suspended in an aqueous solution containing the stabilizing agents, transferred to a stirred vessel, and polymerized. Up to 10μm spheres, of a far narrower size distribution than those obtained by conventional microsuspension polymerization spheres, were obtained. The initial droplet size and distribution were retained with the successful suppression of secondary particle nucleation by the addition of hydroquinone in the aueous phase. Crosslinked polystyrene spheres were also synthesized in the presence of various low-molecular-weight diluents. While a good solvent, toluene, was not so effective; poor solvents, n-heptane and n-heptane, easily yielded the microporous structure, the specific surface area being as high as 160 m2/g. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
