Notes: A model system for studying the reinforcement of paper is provided by the use of cationic latexes. The control of pH during addition of the latex to the pulp determines the uniformity of the latex deposition on the fibers. It is demonstrated, using scanning electron microscopy and mechanical testing of the sheet, that the dry and wet strength properties are improved by the more uniform distribution of a film-forming latex. Conversely, a nonfilming latex impedes bonding to the extent that the fiber surface is covered.

Notes: Polystyrene latexes have been synthesized by a method based on that Kotera et al.4 The polymerization rates and yields have been improved by the addition of an alcohol (methanol) to the reactants. The effects of varying the methanol content and other process variables on the polymerization and on the properties of the latex are reported.

Notes: Four experimental latexes of different styrene-butadiene ratios stabilized with quaternized amino groups were employed in deposition studies on unbeaten kraft pulp fibers. The attraction between the oppositely charged latex and fibers facilitates a ready latex deposition in the pH region between the points of zero charge of the latex and of the fibers. The rate of deposition appears to be controlled by latex diffusion and convection up to the fiber surface. The distribution of latex particles deposited on the fiber surface is related to the butadiene content and the latex stability. Polystyrene latex is the most stable and covers the fibers uniformly as individual particles. With increased butadiene content, the coagulation region of the latex is more extended and the tendency to deposit as aggregates is promoted.

Notes: Under equilibrium conditions the dependence of the electrical conductivity of cotton cellulose (Whatman 42 ashless filter paper) on moisture content was of an exponential type up to 3.5%. The transient conductivity of paper undergoing water sorption has been measured concurrently with the transient moisture content. The transient conductivity was greater than that at steady state, the difference increasing with decreasing initial moisture content. The results are explained in terms of thermal effects due to the heat evolved during water sorption.

Notes: In the manufacture of corrugated board, thermal gelatinization of raw starch granules in the adhesive is essential for bonding setting. Kinetic studies of gelatinization of cornstarch adhesive under conditions simulating those at the corrugator revealed that the rate of advance of the gelatinization front in the starch film was linear with square root of time. A quasiactivation energy of 35.5 kJ/mol was found. The gelatinization process, above the gel point, was controlled by the rate of diffusion of water into the starch granules.

Notes: A cell growth factor protein (insulin) and/or a cell-adhesion protein (fibronectin) were immobilized on surface-hydrolyzed poly(methyl methacrylate) membranes. The growth of mouse fibroblast cells STO was accelerated by the immobilized insulin. This acceleration was enhanced by introduction of spacer arms. Coimmobilization of insulin and fibronectin was very effective for the acceleration of cell growth. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) is known to require a suitable carrier to induce ectopic bone formation in vivo. Hydroxyapatite ceramics have been reported to be effective in some forms but ineffective in others as a carrier of BMP-induced bone formation. In this study we compare three geometrically different forms of hydroxyapatite to examine their functions as carriers of BMP-induced bone formation. A fraction containing all the active BMPs (BMP cocktail) was partially purified from a 4M guanidine extract from bovine bone by a three-step chromatographic procedure. The BMP cocktail was combined with each of three forms of hydroxyapatite - solid particles (SPHAP), porous particles (PPHAP), and coral-replicated porous tablets (coral-HAP) - and implanted subcutaneously into rats. Both the PPHAP and coral-HAP systems induced osteogenesis 2 weeks after implantation, as evidenced by morphological and biochemical observations. Details of the osteogenetic process were followed by double-fluorescence labeling in the coral-HAP system to confirm bone formation on the surface of hydroxyapatite. However, there was no evidence of osteogenesis or chondrogenesis in the SPHAP system. The results indicate that the geometry of the interconnected porous structure in PPHAP and coral-HAP create spaces for vasculature that lead to osteogenesis while the smooth structure and close contact of particles in SPHAP inhibit vascular formation and proliferation of mesenchymal cells, preventing bone and cartilage formation. It was concluded that the geometrical structure in hydroxyapatite ceramics that induces vasculature is crucial as a carrier for BMP-induced bone formation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
