Notes: Propylene was polymerized with rac-ethylene-bis (1-η5-indenyl)dichlorozirconium/methylaluminoxane in solvents of different polarity. The poly (propylene) formed was separated by solvent extraction; 13C-NMR and DSC measurements were made on the polymer fractions. The poly(propylene) in each solvent fraction has its characteristic molecular weight steric pentad distributions, melting transition temperature, and enthalpy for fusion irrespective of the polymerization medium. The results suggest that the medium dielectric constant does not affect the polymerization rate or the intrinsic stereoselectivity, propagation and chain transfer rates a given catalytic species but can alter the occurrence of steric insertion errors through shifting of distributions of the propagating species producing poly(propylenes) of different stereoregularities. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: CH-type catalysts were prepared by reacting MgCl2 · ROH, where ROH is 2-ethyl hexanol (EH), (R)-2-octanol (R-20), and (S)-2-octanol (S-20), with TiCl4 in the presence of di-i-butyl phthalate (BP), di-i-butyl terephthalate (BT), (-)-dimenthyl phthalate (MP), or (-)-dimenthyl terephthalate (MT). The MT catalysts were found to incorporate 8.9 to 13% Ti whereas the BP catalysts contain only 1.9 to 2.6% Ti. Comparison of the CH(EH, BP) and CH(EH, MT) catalysts showed that they have about equal number of isospecific active sites per gram of catalyst and the same rate constants of propagation for their nonspecific sites, however, the isospecific sites in the latter are less active by comparison. Consequently, the CH(EH, BP) catalysts is five times more active than the CH(EH, MT) catalysts and produces polypropylene which is 97% isotactic (reflux n-heptane insoluble) as compared to 84.7% for the latter. The catalysts derived from 2-octanols are much less active than the corresponding catalysts prepared with 2-ethyl hexanol due to lack of reactivity with phthalic anhydride which permits excessive incorporation of TiCl4 to form nonstereospecific catalytic sites as well as inactive Ti species.

Notes: The formation of CH-type catalysts has been investigated by high-resolution and solid-state NMR. These catalysts are prepared from a soluble MgCl2 and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol adduct (MgCl2·3EH) by reaction with phthalic anhydride (PA) to form dioctylphthalate (DOP) and then with TiCl4 in the presence of di-i-butylphthalate (BP). In the model systems MgCl2·3EH/PA, MgCl2/BP, and MgCl2/TiCl4/BP, the ester is complexed with MgCl2 and /or TiCl4 in two or more states. Only single-ester C=O and OCH2 resonances are seen in TiCl4/BP, probably due to exchange of ester coordinations. CH-catalysts prepared by three different procedures exhibit a single mode of bonding for the ester. The chemical shift values are consistent for ester complexed with MgCl2. The most active and stereoselective catalyst has the most shielded chemical shift values for the C=O and  - OCH2 -  carbons, shortest TH1 and TH1p, and longest TCH relaxation times. These parameters change monotonically with the decrease of activity and stereoselectivity of the catalyst preparation. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Experimental flow rate data are presented for saturated liquid, saturated vapor, and two-phase liquid-vapor carbon dioxide through a convergent nozzle and a square-edged orifice. The data cover the range from the triple-point pressure to the critical pressure. Charts have been prepared for this complete range at critical flow. Results are also presented for subcritical flow. The tests at various back pressures indicate that the saturated liquid behaved as a cold liquid without evaporation ahead of the throat.Saturated vapor became supersaturated in the nozzle, and the vapor behaved as if no condensation occurred.Equations are presented for the flow rates of saturated vapor, and two-phase mixtures in the critical flow region.A Mollier (pressure-enthalpy) diagram is used to determine the flow rates of saturated vapor and two-phase mixtures where supersaturtation takes place. In these cases, the lines of constant specific volume or density are extrapolated from the superheated region into the normal two-phase region to obtain values corrected for supersaturation.

Notes: A flow visualization study was made with an optically birefringent solution of milling yellow dye in water flowing through a transparent duct of isoceles triangular cross section. The present data confirm a number of theoretical predictions concerning transitional phenomena in triangular ducts. One of the most interesting of these phenomena is the existence of a region of simultaneous laminar and turbulent flow in the duct. The present results, which agree with the theory, indicate an order of laminar and turbulent flow which is inverse to previous observations made with smoke filament tracings.

Notes: The effectiveness of the stationary form of the discrete Kalman filter for state estimation in noisy process systems was demonstrated by simulated and experimental tests on a pilot plant evaporator. The filter was incorporated into a multivariable, computer control system and resulted in good control despite process and/or measurement noise levels of 10%. The results were significantly better than those obtained when the Kalman filter was omitted or replaced by conventional exponential filters. In this application the standard Kalman filter was reasonably insensitive to incorrect estimates of initial conditions or noise statistics and to errors in model parameters. The filter estimates were sensitive to unmeasured process disturbances. However this sensitivity could be reduced by treating the noise covariance matrices R and Q as design parameters rather than noise statistics and selecting values which result in increased weighting of the process measurements relative to the calculated model states.

Notes: A detailed mathematical model of a single catalyst pellet has been developed to describe its behavior under transient conditions encountered during the warmup period of automobile exhaust catalytic converters. In contrast to the converter models previously reported in the literature, this model is capable of describing the time-dependent behavior of a composite catalyst pellet, and thus provides a convenient means of examining the effects of poison penetration and various noble metal impregnation strategies in the activity-time (rather than activity-temperature) domain.Extensive calculations were carried out to investigate the effects of various catalyst design parameters and converter operating conditions on the lightoff behavior of a spherical, platinum-alumina catalyst pellet. Due to the complex kinetics of the CO and hydrocarbon oxidation reactions, catalyst lightoff was found to exhibit interesting behavior with respect to variations of the system's design parameters and operating conditions. Graphs are presented to illustrate the parameteric sensitivity of these effects.
