    Notes: Diffusion and distribution coefficients of water and sodium chloride have been measured in cellulose acetate osmotic membranes. These coefficients have been found to vary with the degree of acetylation of the cellulose ester. The diffusion coefficient of water varies from 5.7 × 10-6 to 1.3 × 10-6 cm.2/sec., and the diffusion coefficient of salt varies from 2.9 × 10-8 to 3.9 × 10-11 as the acetyl content is increased from 33.6 to 43.2 wt.-%. A homogeneous diffusion model is proposed which describes the observations in terms of Fick's law.

    Notes: Cellulose acetate reverse osmosis membranes, 600-2800 A. thick, have been prepared on glass surfaces by dipping a clean glass plate into a dilute solution of cellulose acetate. After drying, the membranes are floated of onto a water surface and placed on molecular filter supports. Theoretical salt rejections, as calculated from the solution-diffusion model of membrane transport for cellulose acetate, were obtained with imperfection-free membranes.

    Notes: A composite reverse-osmosis membrane has been developed for seawater desalination having a 400-Å semipermeable barrier. The membrane is prepared by directly forming a very thin film of a polymer, generally cellulose triacetate, upon the finely porous surface of a supporting membrane. The composite membrane, capable of desalinating seawater in a single pass, has demonstrated improved flux stability at high pressures over modified membranes currently used to desalinate brackish water.
