    Notizen: The compound K14Cd9Tl21 has been prepared by fusion of the elements in a tantalum reactor followed by slow cooling at the rate of 6° per hour to enable crystal growth. The X-ray crystal structure (hexagonal, P2m; a = 9.884(3), c =17.173(5) Å; Z = 2) was refined to reliability factors of R1 = 5.09, wR2 = 11.64%. The anionic substructure contains both isolated clusters of Tl7-11 and a layered network based on Cd5Tl2 pentagonal bipyramids. The structure-electron count relationship for the Tl7-11 cluster was analyzed in detail. The Cd9Tl7-10 layers are found to confer metallic properties to the material, and the bonding within such layers is found to be highly delocalized.

    Notizen: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of seed crystal size on the rate of nucleation in batch stirred-tank crystallizers. Experimental results confirm the existence of such an effect. Nucleation rate data are correlated with a second-order polynomial in seed crystal size; coefficients of the correlation are functions of the solute-solvent system, crystallizer geometry, and mixing conditions. The empirical correlation is incorporated into a population balance model for determining the nucleation rate in multi-seed crystallizers. The observed results are explained in terms of variations in impact energy, circulation frequency, and target efficiency.

    Notizen: The purpose of this study was to investigate contact nucleation for various types of crystalline materials. Selected were aqueous solutions of two hydrated inorganic salts (MgSO4 · 7H2O and KAl(SO4)2 · 12H2O), one nonhydrated inorganic salt (K2SO4) and one organic substance (citric acid). Nucleation data were determined as number of nuclei generated per contact as a function of supersaturation and impact energy. Both of these variables strongly influenced the number of nuclei generated per contact. These data show that crystal growth and contact nucleation are related, with more rapidly growing substances giving higher yields of nuclei.

    Notizen: When salts or electrolytes are encountered in the design of separation equipment, the effects of these electrolytes on the vapor-liquid equilibrium behavior of nonelectrolytes are often neglected. This is the case because there has not been a method for the correlation of data for salt containing systems which can be used for varying salt and solvent compositions. Boone, Rousseau, and Schoenborn (1976) proposed a method for correlating data from binary solvent-salt systems which are not restricted in this manner. This work proposes an extension that correlates phase equilibrium behavior using the Prausnitz UNIQUAC equation, which can be used for systems having regions of immiscibility. In addition, the model used for binary solvent systems is extended to multisolvent salt systems, and it is shown that vapor-liquid equilibrium data for these systems can be predicted from data on binary solvent-salt systems.

    Notizen: Previously published data for the six binary combinations that can be formed from CO2, H2S, N2 and methanol are used to obtain parameters of the four-suffix Margules equation describing liquid solution behavior. The vapor phase is described by the Soave modification of the Redlich-Kwong equation of state. Isothermal binary data are fit well by these equations. The effects of temperature on the Margules parameters are significant and, except for N2-containing mixtures, the parameters were taken to be inversely proportional to absolute temperature.Experimental data were obtained for multicomponent mixtures of CO2, H2S, N2 and methanol. Model predictions were tested against these data. Comparisons of predicted and measured values of bubble point pressure and equilibrium vapor compositions are satisfactory.

    Notizen: Growth of potassium alum crystals was characterized by the advance rates of crystals on the leading edge of population distributions and by the advance rates of the modes of these distributions. Growth rates of crystals on the leading edge appeared to follow size-dependent kinetics, but the observed spread of the distribution about the average size was much greater than would be expected from size-dependent growth alone. The spread of the distribution was correlated with the extent of growth determined from the net advance of the average crystal size. These quantitative and qualitative results show that what has often been referred to as size-dependent growth is in fact a manifestation of growth rate dispersion.
