Notes: Existing heat exchanger design criteria do not satisfy the continually increasing requirements for greater efficiency or mass flux and energy throughput. Occasionally, failures appear even after only a few hours of operation, as shown in section 3. A long series of experiments, often carried out on original scale, did lead to the derivation of a large number of empirical expressions; however, physical explanations of the complex tube-failure interactions could not as yet be found. In contrast, experiments with a well defined simple model, whereby the tube deflections were recorded digitally and, at the same time, tube-fluid interactions were registered on a high-speed film, show that elementary “fluid transport mechanisms” control the stability behaviour of the heat exchanger tubes. Vibration excitation mechanisms such as “galloping”, “jet switching” and “whirling” (fluid elastic coupling) proved, with their characteristics, as typical for the vibration behaviour of single rows within the tube array, but not for the vibration phenomena of tube bundles.

Notes: The prediction of leak areas in pressure vessels is an important objective in the safety analysis of chemical plants. Using suitable design rules, a leak-before-break behaviour can be achieved. This contribution outlines a procedure for the leak-before-break design of nozzle attachments and the determination of the size of the corresponding opening area. In addition, K1-factors and leak areas for a number of nozzle geometries have been calculated and plotted.

Notes: Leakage analysis in application of the breakdown ordinance. The breakdown ordinance places certain demands on safety analysis of chemical plant. An important component of such a safety analysis is accordingly a description of the sources of danger which can trigger a breakdown and information about the effects of a breakdown. In this connection, it is particularly important that not all conceivable sources of danger should be considered but only those which cannot be reasonably excluded. Plant-based sources of danger of this kind are, e.g., mechanical failure, failure of walls as a result of corrosion, leakage, etc. If the leak cross sections to be expected are known, then the prescribed propagation calculation for a possible breakdown can be performed. The leaks to be expected for various highly stressed plant components such as pipework, vessels, tanks, pipe-cylinder joints, flanged joints are presented.

Notes: Estimation of Potential Danger Arisig from Pressure-Condensed Gases. Analytical solutions are shown for a specific industrial application in order to estimate the potential danger of pressure condensation of gases. First of all it should be determined in which positions high stresses have to be expected. Afte excluding the case “Bruch vor Leck” (breakage before leak), possible cross sections of leakages can be stated. The laws of thermodynamics laws can be used to determine quantities pertaining to the states of aggregation concerned (liquid/gaseous) may be determined in case of failure. Finally it is possible to determine the size of the ground cradle as well as possible undergrate firing by an investigation of the processes at the liquied pools. Finally we indicated a water sprinkling plant sufficient for handling cases of fire. It was taken into account that the total heat of combustion of the leakage stream will be transferred to the cooling water film.
