    Notes: Amidoxime-group-containing fibrous adsorbents for metal ions were synthesized by radiation-induced grafting of acrylonitrile followed by amidoximation of cyano groups with hydroxylamine. The degree of amidoximation and the distribution of amidoxime groups in the fiber were follwed by means of electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The efficiency of adsorbing metal ions was increased by alkaline treatment of the adsorbent at high temperature for a short period before use. The order of adsorption for various bivalent metal ions was Hg 〉 Cu 〉 Ni 〉 Co 〉 Cd. From the distribution pattern of metal ions in the fibrous adsorbent, the adsorption was found to be controlled by the diffusion of the solution containing metal ions inside the adsorbent. It was found that confining amidoxime groups superficially and making short chain length of grafts were effective to obtain a high degree of adsorption.

    Notes: Polypropylene fibers and polyethylene hollow fibers were used as trunk polymers and were irradiated by electron beams with a dose of 200 kGy under N2 atmosphere. Grafting of acrylonitrile to those irradiated fibers was carried out at 40°C for different periods of time. The degree of grafting was determined as a function of time. The fibrous adsorbents containing amidoxime groups were prepared by the reaction of acrylonitrile-grafted polymers with 3% hydroxylamine in a methanol-water mixture (1 : 1). Distribution of copper ions complexed with amidoxime groups at various adsorption times was obtained by electron-probe X-ray microanalysis. The amidoxime groups are homogeneously distributed in the cross section of fibrous adsorbents. The fibrous adsorbents based upon polypropylene fiber of 40 μm showed a remarkable kinetic behavior for Cu2+. Even after 15 min, the adsorption capacity was 2.32 mmol Cu2+ per gram of fiber. Also, the functionalization with hydroxylamine was carried out at different conditions to compare the adsorption characteristics of the resultant adsorbents. Despite having superficially different properties (elemental microanalysis, ion-exchange capacities, adsorption capacity for UO2+2), the polypropylene-based fibrous adsorbents showed similar adsorption properties for uranium from sea water. The adsorption tests proved the performance of the polypropylene-based fibrous adsorbents as a promising material for uranium recovery from sea water. In addition, uranium uptake of fibrous adsorbents increased in proportion to the volume of sea water. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An attempt was made to introduce a strong base anion-exchange group by radiation-induced grafting of vinyl benzyltrimethylammonium chloride (VBTAC) onto polyethylene film. Both two-step grafting and comonomer grafting techniques were tried owing to the difficulty of direct graft polymerization of VBTAC onto polyethylene. 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and ethyl methacrylate (EMA), having the same backbone structure except that the hydroxyl group of HEMA was grafted onto the polyethylene film and then VBTAC was grafted to examine the reactivity of VBTAC with each grafted polyethylene film. Co-grafting of the binary mixtures of VBTAC and HEMA, or EMA, onto polyethylene film was also carried out. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The radiation-induced polymerization of ethylene was carried out by use of a benchscale plant with a flow-type reactor of 1 liter capacity under the following conditions: pressure, 200-400 kg/cm2; temperature, 30-90°C; irradiation intensity, 3.8 × 105 rad/hr; and ethylene flow rate, 300-3000 nl/hr. The molecular weight of polymer formed was shown to decrease with increasing reaction temperature and to increase with increasing pressure. When the ethylene flow rate increases, the molecular weight decreases in the polymerization at 30-60°C, but it does not change in the polymerization at 75-90°C. Methyl group content, which is a measure of short-chain branching of the polymer, increases with increasing reaction temperature, i.e., ca. 1 CH3/1000 CH2 at 30°C and ca. 9 CH3/1000 CH2 at 90°C. Methyl content is independent of the ethylene flow rate. The changes in the melt index of polymer with reaction conditions corresponds to the change of the molecular weight. The density, crystallinity, and melting point of polymer decrease with the reaction temperature as the short-chain branching increases, and they are almost independent of ethylene flow rate and pressure.
