Notizen: Silicone macromers 5, having a methacryloyl group at one end, and controiled molecular weights, were prepared by anionic polymerization of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (2) and subsequent termination with chlorosilane compounds containing a polymerizable vinyl groups. Graft polymers with siloxane grafts were prepared by copolymerization of these macromers with methyl methacrylate (MMA) or styrene. The surface active properties of MMA-based graft polymers were investigated by studying the extent of surface modification of films of graft polymer-poly(methyl methacrylate) blends.

Notizen: Telechelic polystyrene with glycylamino groups as active chain ends was prepared and used as initiator for the polymerization of the NCA of methyl D-glutamate [4-(2-methoxycarbonyl)ethyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2,5-dione] (1). Using propionitrile or preferably ethyl acetate as solvent, the stepwise polymerization of the NCA 1 proceeded with a sufficiently high initiator efficiency, giving ABA-type block copolymers consisting of polystyrene and polypeptide segments.

Notizen: Polyamide-polystyrene and polyamide-poly(oxyethylene) segmented copolymers 6a, b of well-defined structure and composition were synthesized using telechelic prepolymers. α,ω-Dicarboxyl-terminated polystyrene 2 was prepared by radical polymerization of styrene initiated by 4,4′-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) (1). α,ω-Dicarboxyl-terminated poly(oxyethylene) 3 was prepared by the reaction of commercially available hydroxyl-terminated poly(oxyethylene) with excess succinic anhydride. These telechelic prepolymers were condensed with hexamethylenediamine in a 1:1 mole ratio together with nylon-6,6 salt using the triphenyl phosphite/pyridine system. Similarly, α,ω-diamino-terminated polystyrene 5 was prepared and condensed with adipic acid and nylon-6,6 salt. The segmented copolymers 6a and 6b were characterized by their 1H NMR and IR spectra.

Notizen: Well-defined graft copolymers composed of a hydrophilic clyceryl methacrylate backbone and hydrophobic monodisperse molecular weight polystyrene branches were prepared by the macromonomer technique. The swelling behaviour and the oxygen permeability of hydrogels prepared from these graft copolymers were studied. It was found that equilibrium water content of these hydrogels was considerably high and depended on both the graft copolymer structure and the microphase separated structure of the prepared hydrogel. Oxygen permeability of the hydrogels was directly related to their water content. Hydrogel membranes prepared from the graft copolymers have also well-defined structures which can be easily controlled by the graft copolymer structure.

Notizen: Polymerization of 1-oxa-3-thiacyclopentane with catalytic amounts of triethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate was studied. The initiation reaction was a fast and quantitative formation of ethylsulfonium salt of monomer. The propagation reaction was a slow and quite complex reaction with sulfonium transfer reactions. The reaction mechanism is discussed.

Notizen: Polysiloxane-poly(methyl methacrylate) and polysiloxane-polystyrene graft copolymers of well-defined structure and composition were synthesized by hydrosilylation. Polysiloxanes with Si—H bonds were prepared by equilibrium ring-opening polymerization of cyclic siloxane oligomers catalyzed by trifluoroacetic acid. Molecular weight and Si—H group content were controlled by the feed ratio. Allyl-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene were prepared by the reaction of carboxyl-terminated prepolymers with allyl glycidyl ether. The hydrosilylation reactions of Si—H containing polysiloxanes with these allyl-terminated polymers produced tailor-made graft copolymers, which were characterized by their 1H NMR and IR spectra.

Notizen: Water-soluble graft copolymers of well-defined structure having hydrophobic polymethacrylate branches with different ester groups were prepared by the macromonomer method. Methacrylate macromonomers of controlled molecular weights having a methacryloyloxyl end group were synthesized by radical polymerization of the corresponding monomer in the presence of thioglycolic acid followed by the reaction of glycidyl methacrylate with the terminal carboxyl group. These macromonomers were copolymerized with methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate to prepare tailor-made graft copolymers composed of a hydrophlic backbone and different kinds of hydrophobic branches, which were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, and GPC. The viscosities of the aqueous solutions of the sodium salts of these graft copolymers were measured. It was found that the viscosity of the dilute solution of the graft copolymer was remarkably high compared with the corresponding random copolymer irrespective of the ester group in branch segments. Solubilizing behavior of Orange-OT in aqueous solutions of the graft copolymers and the random copolymer were also investigated to study the nature of the hydrophobic domain of the graft copolymers.

Notizen: Mercapto-16-crown-5 was prepared starting from tetraethyleneglycol and 3-chloro-2-chloromethyl-1-propene. Radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out in the presence of mercapto-16-crown-5 as a chain transfer agent to give crown ether-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate). The end crown group was characterized by IR and 1H-NMR spectra. Sodium cation was selectively extracted by this crown-containing polymer. The molecular weight of the obtained polymer had influence upon the ability of extraction of sodium cation.

Notizen: Hydroxyl- or amino-terminated prepolymers were prepared by radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of 2-mercaptoethanol or 2-aminoethanethiol hydrochloride, respectively, as a chain transfer agent. The resulting prepolymers were subjected to react with trimellitic anhydride to form aromatic dicarboxyl-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate)s. These condensation-type macromonomers and terephthalic acid were condensed with bisphenol-A to produce polyester-poly(methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers.

Notizen: Polystyrenes with structurally different oligosiloxanes as p-substituents were synthesized and the selective oxygen permeation through the polymer film was studied. It was found that the structure of the p-oligosiloxane substituents had great effects not only on the glass transition temperature of the polymer but also on the oxygen permeation behavior through the polymer film. Trimethylsiloxyl groups, especially, were shown to play an essential role in enhancing the permeability.
