Notes: Summary It is very difficult to stabilize a defective osteosynthesis of the lower extremity, which is necessary to prevent bone infection. Mainly responsible for the instability is the lack of bending stability of the transosseous nails which are loaded across their axle. In a newly developed model called the “tensile rod fixateur” (Labitzke and Henze 1979–1980) Schanz screws function as tensile rods. A defective osteosynthesis treated with this principle shows 5–20 times more stability than those treated in a conventional way.
