Zusammenfassung Die Leistungsfähigkeit der Krankenhauschirurgie ist erheblich gestiegen: Aufgabenerweiterung - quantitativ und qualitativ -, Vermehrung der diagnostisch-therapeutischen Leistungen, Erweiterung der Ressourcen (Flächenaufwand, Einrichtung und Ausstattung). Dagegen konnte die Personalbesetzung im Arztdienst den gestiegenen Anforderungen nicht angepaßt werden. Von daher besteht die große Gefahr, daß Kostenbegrenzung um jeden Preis nicht nur die Weiterentwicklung der Krankenhauschirurgie beeinträchtigt, sondern auch die bisherige Leistungsfähigkeit ernsthaft gefährdet.

Summary The efficiency of hospital surgery has considerably increased: widening the range of tasks - quantitatively and qualitatively -, increase of diagnostic and therapeutical performances, enlargement of resources (amount spent on buildings and equipment). On the other hand, staffing with doctors could not be adapted to increased requirements. Hence the great danger that cost-containment at any price will not only affect the further development of hospital surgery but will also seriously endanger previous efficiency.
