Notes: Abstract  One of the main advantages of digital imaging is the possibility of altering display options for improved image interpretation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the subjective image quality of direct digital panoramic images and compare the results with those obtained from conventional images. Furthermore, the effect of various filter settings on image interpretation was assessed. Panoramic images were obtained with three different types of panoramic equipment (one direct digital and two conventional units) from three groups of 54 patients with a natural dentition in all quadrants. The first series of panoramic images consisted of 54 unprocessed digital images; conventional film images (n=108) comprised the second and third series. A final series consisted of the digital images treated with three different filters (”smoothening,””sharpening,” and ”contrast enhancement”). All images were scored randomly by four experts in oral radiology on a 4-point rating scale. The results showed a statistically significant difference in scorings between the conventional and digital panoramic units. The main reason for poor image quality appeared to be a combination of blurring and overlapping in the panoramic image. The premolar region in the upper jaw was the region where most additional radiographs were needed.

Notes: The photo-oxidation of blends of low-density polyethylene and styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymers has, been shown to result mainly from the degradation of the pollybutadiene part of the material. The solution infra-red and fluorescence spectra, and mechanical properties have been studied as a function of the irradiation time. Evidence of some interaction between the components of the blend could be obtained.

Notes: Data on pressure drop in two-phase, single-component fluid flow, both with and without heat transfer, are presented in terms of the Lockhart and Martinelli correlation parameters. The fluids used were trichloromonofluoromethane and hydrogen. The results are compared with the correlation curve recommended by Martinelli and Nelson and give frictional pressure drops that are about 40% lower than the curve. The reasons for the deviations are discussed in terms of the effects of friction factors, the existence of metastable equilibrium, accuracy of data and instrumentation, and calculation procedures. It is concluded that the Martinelli and Nelson correlation and a simple momentum pressure drop computation can be superposed to predict roughly the total pressure drop in tubes containing steady state, two-phase, single-component fluid flow with appreciable vaporization.

Notes: Blends containing polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE, or LDPE-LLDPE) with different weight percent of styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) triblock copolymers have been obtained by extrusion-blowing. The morphology of the blends, investigated by scanning electron microcopy (SEM), has been related to composition but also to different parameters such as viscosity, nature of the polyethylene phase, and extrusion conditions. A large range of morphologies is observed and indicates that the main factors determining the morphology of the blends are the composition, the elongational fields at the exit of the die and, in certain limits, the relative viscosities of the components of the blends.
