Notes: Abstract Plasma factors influencing vascular PGI2-like activity (PSA) were studied in 45 patients with IgA nephropathy, 18 with Henoch-Schönlein purpura, including 8 children with nephrotic syndrome, and 41 controls. The results were compared with the levels of plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and fatty acid components of plasma phospholipids. The plasma of 38 of 45 patients with IgA nephropathy and 14 with Henoch-Schönlein purpura showed a diminished ability or no ability to support PSA. Twenty-three patients with IgA nephropathy and 10 with Henoch-Schönlein purpura exhibited an inhibitory activity against PGI2 production. The plasma HDL level was lower, while the LDL level and the LDL/HDL ratio were significantly higher in IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein purpura cases than in the controls. A high LDL/HDL ratio was associated with a low plasma PSA. The levels of arachidonic acid and its precursor were not lower in the plasma of patients than in the controls. The decreased PGI2 synthesis may play an important role in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein purpura, but it can not be explained by reduced PG precursors. LDL may have an inhibitory, and HDL a protective effect on PGI2 synthesis.

Notes: Abstract The incidences of clinical and biological markers of atopy were investigated in 16 children with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) (group A) and in 22 with Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) (group B). The incidence of increased plasma IgE levels according to age-matched normal values was significantly higher in group B (17/22, 77%) than in group A (7/16, 44%) (P〈0.05). Although not significant, the incidences of positive RAST tests and of a history of typical atopic symptoms were also higher in group B [10/22 (45%) and 11/22 (50%), respectively] than in group A [4/16 (25%) and 5/16 (31%), respectively]. Moreover, IgE deposits were demonstrated by a peroxidase/anti-peroxidase method on cutaneous Langerhans and mast cells in 4 of 6 patients with HSPN. Thus immunoallergy might account, in some cases, for the cutaneous, intestinal and pulmonary signs observed in HSPN, but not in IgAN. We postulate stimulation of IgE-sensitized mast cells by specific antigens in the presence of IgA circulating immune complexes (CIC), release of vasoactive substances, increased capillary permeability and perivascular deposition of IgA CIC.

Notes: Summary Migration of spots in displacement development was investigated using a planar stationary phase. The effects of the presence or absence of the additive substances in the carrier were demonstrated when these compounds also played a role in the competition for the binding sites of the stationary phase; however, they were not members of the displacement train. In the case of displacement chromatography, compounds A+B are well separated but located very closely to each other. Using a spacer (C) in the sample, the peaks or spots of A and B are aparted by C and their virtual separation is increased. When compounds A+B were displaced by each other as well as by the displacer, the presence of the additive compound C in the carrier (carrier-spacer) can transfer an otherwise displaced component (A) into the so-called overloaded elution region of the chromatogram. At the same time the additive compound C does not unconditionally reduce the performance of displacement chromatography.
