Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Von 1957-1980 wurden 67 endothorakale Strumen diagnostiziert, 60 davon operiert.
Notes: Summary From 1957 to 1979, 67 intrathoracic goiters were diagnosed, and 60 of them underwent surgery. Because of the lack of symptoms for intrathoracic goiter, the tentative diagnosis was made by routine X-ray examination of the thorax and the diagnosis by J1 31 scan. Of these goiters, 62 % were resected by posterolateral thoracotomy, 38 % by sternotomy. The complications were: pareses of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in 15 % and postoperative lethality in 6.7 %. The prophylaxis of goiter recidivation should be practiced even after surgical treatment of intrathoracic goiters.
