    Notizen: Summary A patient with the diagnosis of enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease) presented with seizures. CT examination showed an avascular right frontal lobe lesion. Surgery revealed a histologically verified grade II astrocytoma. This case is consistent with recent evidence that questions the distinction between the two forms of enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease and Maffucci's syndrome). Maffucci's syndrome is associated with a high rate of malignancy, including intracranial gliomas. Olliver's disease has not been associated with malignant change, other than sarcomatous transformation of the enchondromas. However, Ollier's disease and Maffucci's syndrome may be a spectrum of the same disease process, and therefore patients with diagnosed Ollier's disease are at a higher risk for malignancy than has been previously recognized.

    Notizen: The stability of a class of geometrically non-linear assumed enhanced strain elements is addressed. By means of an eigenvalue analysis of element tangent stiffnesses at finitely deformed configurations, circumstances under which enhanced elements become unstable, with possible development of non-physical hourglass patterns, are identified. Insight into the influence of spurious eigenvalues on the stability of solution of finite elasticity and elastoplasticity problems is provided by simple numerical tests with a patch of elements. Results of simulations of some practical engineering problems are presented and limitations on the applicability of enhanced strain elements in the finite strain regime are discussed.

    Notizen: A model based on the penalty method for 3-D contact problems with friction is proposed. The friction forces are assumed to follow the Coulomb law, with a slip criterion treated in the context of a standard return mapping algorithm. Consistent linearization of the field equations is performed which leads to a fully implicit scheme with non-symmetric tangent stiffness which preserves asymptotic quadratic convergence of the Newton-Raphson method. Numerical results are obtained for some representative examples and compared with existing solutions.

    Notizen: The a posteriori error estimates based on the post-processing approach are introduced for elastoplastic solids. The standard energy norm error estimate established for linear elliptic problems is generalized here to account for the presence of internal variables through the norm associated with the complementary free energy. This is known to represent a natural metric for the class of elastoplastic problems of evolution. In addition, the intrinsic dissipation functional is utilized as a basis for a complementary a posteriori error estimates. A posteriori error estimates and adaptive refinement techniques are applied to the finite element analysis of a strain localization problem. As a model problem, the constitutive equations describing a generalization of standard J2-elastoplasticity within the Cosserat continuum are used to overcome serious limitations exhibited by classical continuum models in the post-instability region. The proposed a posteriori error estimates are appropriately modified to account for the Cosserat continuum model and linked with adaptive techniques in order to simulate strain localization problems. Superior behaviour of the Cosserat continuum model in comparison to the classical continuum model is demonstrated through the finite element simulation of the localization in a plane strain tensile test for an elastopiastic softening material, resulting in convergent solutions with an h-refinement and almost uniform error distribution in all considered error norms.

    Notizen: This paper considers a layered thick shell finite element procedure for determining the dynamic transient nonlinear response of plates and shells. The degenerated three-dimensional isoparametric shell element with independent rotational and translational degrees-of-freedom is employed and a layered formulation is adopted to represent the steel reinforcement and to simulate progressive concrete cracking through the thickness. The dynamic yielding function is assumed to be a function of the current strain rate, in addition to being total plastic strain or work dependent. The concrete model also simulates both compressive crushing and tensile cracking behaviours and an implicit Newmark algorithm is employed for time integration of the equations of motion. Several numerical examples are presented for both slab and shell structures and the results obtained compared with those from other sources wherever available.
