Notes: Summary The Application of Finite Elements to Heat Conduction Problems Involving Latent Heat A finite element method is developed for the solution of heat conduction problems which involve latent heat. The method is superior to other wellknown approaches to these problems in that it allows a wider range of material properties and boundary conditions to be dealt with, such as are encountered in complex engineering operations like ground freezing. The method is applied to simple triangular finite elements in this paper, although it could be extended to other types of element including three-dimensional ones. Several example problems are discussed and illustrated, and comparisons are made with other approaches where these can also be used.

Notes: The solution of plate and shell problems by an independent specification of slopes and middle surface displacements is attractive due to its simplicity and ability of reproducing shear deformation. Unfortunately elements of this type are much too stiff when thickness is reduced. In an earlier paper a derivation of such an element was presented1 which proved very successful in ‘thick’ situations. Here a very simple extension is made which allows the element to be economically used in all situations. The improved flexibility is achieved simply by reducing the order of numerical integration applied to certain terms without sacrificing convergence properties. The process is of very wide applicability in improvement of element properties.

Notes: The visco-plastic model of material behaviour is of much practical interest in its own right and initial strain techniques for its solution have been developed and proved efficient. More important however is the fact that the visco-plastic model can be used to generate plasticity solutions in a simple manner when stationary conditions are reached and, at the other extreme, can reproduce standard creep phenomena. Used in this sense it allows the treatment of non-associated plasticity and strain softening situations which present difficulties in conventional plasticity approaches. A standard programme thus allows the treatment of a wide range of materially non-linear problems. The paper discusses various applications of the new general formulation and introduces certain numerical information on solution stability.

Notes: Several iterative processes for solving elasto-plastic problems are discussed in the context of a general formulation which includes: 1Associated and non-associated plasticity relations.2Strain hardening as well as strain softening behaviour.Advantages of the ‘initial stress’ process are emphasized for a wide category of problems and the isoparametric formulation is used throughout.

Notes: A new, improved infinite element based on mapping is proposed for modelling unbounded domain problems. Mapping has previously been used in such problems, not only for the entire domain, but also for the infinite element itself. The novelty of the present approach is the simplicity of the mapping, and the retention of standard integration abscissae and weights. The implementation of these elements is very straightforward, and they are ideally suited for the analysis of infinite domain static problems in two and three dimensions.

Notes: A combination of a two-dimensional finite element process and a Fourier series in the third dimension, well known in linear applications, is shown to be a possible and efficient way of analysing plastic and visco-plastic behaviour. The economy of the process as contrasted with full three-dimensional solutions is illustrated.
