Notizen: Abstract A method for the analysis of elastic waves in split Hopkinson bars for unlimited time durations is presented. This method allows the separation of component waves traveling in opposite directions in each bar using the strain history measured at one point on the bar and a known end condition for it. The method extends the time period for which valid experimental data can be extracted for a split Hopkinson bar apparatus and eliminates the need for a second independent measurement of the stress waves required in other methods for such extended analyses. Comparisons with the two-point method, which requires two independent strain measurements, show good agreement between the two methods. The accuracy and feasibility of the method are demonstrated through its application to impact experiments on composite laminates. The use of the current method in determining the response of a fiber-reinforced composite laminate under impact loading is described.

Notizen: A new concept for complex structural optimization problems is presented. Based on investigation of the mechanical nature of the studied problem, a set of basic mechanical characteristics can be introduced as the generalized variables. A high-quality explicit first-level approximate problem FA is formed by first-order Taylor series expansion of the behaviour constraints in terms of the generalized variables. The FA is explicit but highly non-linear with respect to design variables. Therefore, a second-level approximation is introduced to solve the FA by considering a sequence of second-level approximate problems SA in the design variable space. This approach is a Two-Level Approximation Concept. Its application to space frame synthesis shows its good grasp of the mechanical nature of the problem. The computational results for several examples show that the method presented in this paper is very efficient.

Notizen: The fluid flow field within an enclosed cylindrical chamber with a rotating flat disc was calculated using a finite volume computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and compared with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. Two particular laminar cases near the Transitional flow regime were investigated: Reynolds number Re=2.5×1 4, chamber aspect ratio G (h/Rd)=0.2 and Re=4.2×104, G (h/Rd)=0.217. This enabled direct comparison with the numerical and experimental results reported by other researchers. The computational details and some major factors that affect the computed accuracy and convergence speed are also discussed in detail. PIV results containing some 4300 velocity vector points in each of seven planes for each case were obtained from the flow field parallel to the rotating disc. It was found that PIV results could be obtained in planes within the boundary layers as well as the core flow by careful use of a thin laser illumination sheet and correct choice of laser pulse separation. There was close agreement between numerical results, the present PIV measurements and other reported experimental and numerical results.
