Notes: Finite element buckling analyses of plates are performed by means of quardrilateral elements having 12 degrees-of-freedom. It is found that if the plate is capable of appreciable transverse shear deformation, initial-stress stiffness matrices that represent the lateral dispalcement by cubic polynomials do not yield convergence to correct results. An initial-stress stiffness that works satisfactorily for both homogeneous and sandwich plates is formulated. A Fortran listing of the associated subroutine is provided.

Notes: Edge displacement of assumed-stress hybrid plate elements are commonly chosen as either linear, quadratic or cubic functions of the edge co-ordinate. The present paper examines the effect of this choice on the acceptability, accuracy, and possible zero energy modes of elements based on a linear stress field. It is concluded that triangular elements may be preferable to quadrilaterals, and that linear edge displacements are not desirable.

Notes: A finite element may satisfy all convergence requirements and work well except for being too stiff or too flexible when the mesh is coarse. Here we discuss a technique for softening or stiffening such elements, provided that they have internal degrees-of-freedom. The technique is applied to a previously derived plate element, and the element is found to be much improved.

Notes: A method is proposed for making overly stiff elements more flexible. The central idea is quite simple and is illustrated by application to a sample element, whose behaviour is greatly improved. The effort needed to soften an element is very small if its stiffness matrix is naturally produced with reference to generalized co-ordinates before a final transformation to nodal displacement degrees-of-freedom.

Notes: Four new ways to relieve the excessive bending stiffness of linear elements are described, and incorporated into plane elements. All satisfy the ‘patch test’. The new elements are compared with existing elements in test problems. Application to three-dimensional problems is proposed.

Notes: The nine-node quadrilateral is much more accurate than its eight-node relative if elements are non-rectangular. However, the nine-node element may display spurious low-energy modes under 2 × 2 Gauss quadrature. These modes can be controlled by using the 3 × 3 quadrature rule, but at added cost. This paper investigates two inexpensive control devices that can be used with 2 × 2 Gauss quadrature.

Notes: A set of three new hybrid elements with rotational degrees-of-freedom (d.o.f.'s) is introduced. The solid, 8-node, hexahedron element is developed for solving three-dimensional elasticity problems. This element has three translational and three rotational d.o.f.'s at each node and is based on a 42-parameter. three-dimensional stress field in the natural convected co-ordinate system. For two-dimensional, plane elasticity problems, an improved triangular hybrid element and a quadrilateral hybrid element are presented. These elements use two translational and one rotational d.o.f. at each node. Three different sets of five-parameter stress fields defined in a natural convected co-ordinate system for the entire element are used for the mixed triangular element. The mixed quadrilateral element is based on a nine-parameter complete linear stress field in natural space. The midside translational d.o.f.'s are expressed in terms of the corner nodal translations and rotations using appropriate transformations. The stiffness matrix is derived based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The elements pass the patch test and demonstrate an improved performance over the existing elements for prescribed test examples.

Notes: This is the first of a two part paper on three-dimensional finite elements with rotational degrees of freedom (DOF). Part I introduces an 8-node solid hexahedron element having three translational and three rotational DOF per node. The corner rotations are introduced by transformation of the midside translational DOF of a 20-node hexahedron element. The new element produces a much smaller effective band width of the global system equations than does the 20-node hexahedron element having midside nodes.A small penalty stiffness is introduced to augment the usual element stiffness so that no spurious zero energy modes are present. The new element passes the patch test and demonstrates greatly improved performance over elements of identical shape but having only translational DOF at the corner nodes.

Notes: A three-node triangular shell element having six d.o.f. per node can be economically generated as a flat element that combines well-known formulations for membrane stiffness and plate bending stiffness. Early elements of this type were inaccurate because the membrane response was poor. Researchers improved the membrane response by adding drilling d.o.f. and by underintegrating the membrane stiffness matrix. More recent research has dealt with the addition of membrane-bending coupling within individual elements and the suppression of mechanisms. The present work intends to continue the improvement by modifying the membrane stiffness, simplifying the membrane-bending coupling device and suppressing mechanisms without degrading performance or causing the mesh to lock.
