    Notes: A new algorithm for free surface corrections in Eulerian finite element computations is presented and applied to a steady state bar rolling process to predict lateral spread. A variety of rolling geometries are examined, including differing height to width ratios and reductions. The bulge profiles, as well as the maximum and mean bulge amounts, are compared in detail with experiments.

    Notes: A forming model based on a viscoplastic flow formulation is derived which includes the effects of small elastic strains. A significant feature of the formulation is its reliance on the dominant inelastic material characteristics in the formation of the stiffness matrix for large strain problems. The resultant non-linear system of equations is solved by an adaptive descent method which combines the rapid convergence of Newton's method near the solution with the robustness of a method of successive approximations. The use of the adaptive descent method effectively extends the viscoplastic flow formulations into the nearly rate-insensitive range of behaviours exhibited, for example, by metals at low temperature, where slow convergence of the non-linear solution algorithm has traditionally hampered their use.

    Notes: Two methods are compared for integrating the strains that can arise in finite element solutions for Eulerian velocity fields associated with large strain material forming processes. With the Galerkin formulation, partial differential equations for the deformation gradient are solved over the entire domain based on a weighted residual; with the streamline integrated technique, the corresponding ordinary differential equations are integrated along characteristic lines. Both methods have yielded accurate integrations for the radial flow and planar rolling problems studied. A finite element technique is also presented for ensuring that the free surfaces of the fluid flow are streamlines. This technique has been used for ensuring proper boundary conditions in the rolling analysis.

    Notes: A methodology is presented for enforcing a contact constraint between a viscoplastic workpiece and the tooling which deforms it. The algorithm is based on a consistent penalty approach wherein an elemental discretization permits elimination of contact tractions prior to solution for the velocity field. When written in rate form, the new algorithm allows contact constraints to be embedded in a viscoplastic formulation without altering the structure of the global matrix equation. Examples are presented to illustrate its use in metal forming simulations.

    Notes: An inexact Newton method is used to solve the steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes and energy equation. Finite volume differencing is employed on a staggered grid using the power law scheme of Patankar. Natural convection in an enclosed cavity is studied as the model problem. Two conjugate-gradient -like algorithms based upon the Lanczos biorthogonalization procedure are used to solve the linear systems arising on each Newton iteration. The first conjugate-gradient-like algorithm is the transpose-free quasi-minimal residual algorithm (TFQMR) and the second is the conjugate gradients squared algorithm (CGS). Incomplete lower-upper (ILU) factorization of the Jacobian matrix is used as a right preconditioner. The performance of the Newton- TFQMR algorithm is studied with regard to different choices for the TFQMR convergence criteria and the amount of fill-in allowed in the ILU factorization. Performance data are compared with results using the Newton-CGS algorithm and previous results using LINPACK banded Gaussian elimination (direct-Newton). The inexact Newton algorithms were found to be CPU competetive with the direct-Newton algorithm for the model problem considered. Among the inexact Newton algorithms, Newton-CGS outperformed Newton- TFQMR with regard to CPU time but was less robust because of the sometimes erratic CGS convergence behaviour.

    Notes: Newton's method and banded Gaussian elimination can be a CPU efficient method for steady-state solutions to two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper we look at techniques that increase the radius of convergence of Newton's method, reduce the number of times the Jacobian must be factored, and simplify evaluation of the Jacobian. The driven cavity and natural convection problems are used as test problems, and finite volume discretization is employed.
