    Notes: The use of multiobjective optimization techniques, which may be regarded as a systematic sensitivity analysis, for the selection and modification of system parameters is presented. A minimax multiobjective optimization model for structural optimization is proposed. Three typical multiobjective optimization techniques - goal programming, compromise programming and the surrogate worth trade-off method - are used to solve such a problem. The application of multiobjective optimization techniques to the selection of system parameters and large scale structural design optimization problems is the main purpose of this paper.

    Notes: This paper describes the basic ideas of sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithms for design optimization. There are two fundamental differences between the various algorithms: (i) the difinition of the QP subproblem solved at each iteration, and (ii) the descent function used during step size determination. The performances of the algorithms can change dramatically depending on how the two steps are executed. Numerical implementation details of various computational steps are discussed. Three programs based on SQP algorithms are used to solve 17 structural design problems having 7 to 96 design variables and 10 to 1051 performance constraints besides design variable bounds. Based on the performance of these programs, efficient procedures to execute various steps of the SQP methods are determined. It is concluded that the potential constraint strategy, where only a subset of the constraints is used to define the QP subproblem, is essential for large scale engineering design applications. With this strategy the SQP methods are quite robust and have great potential for routine application in engineering design.

    Notes: In this two part paper, the problem of implementation of computational algorithms for design optimization into a computer software is discussed. A recently developed algorithm that generates and incorporates approximate second order information about the problem is selected for detailed analyses and discussions. It is shown that numerical behaviour of the algorithm is influenced by variation of the key parameters and procedures. The concept of numerical experiments is introduced, and certain variations of the algorithm and parameters are selected and their influence on its performance is studied. It is shown that the numerical rate of convergence can be substantially improved with proper procedures and values of the parameters. The first part of the paper describes some preliminary analyses and investigations. The second part describes further numerical analyses and detailed procedures for evaluation of performance of various variations of an algorithm or different computer codes. The basic conclusion from the study is that robust and efficient implementation of algorithms requires expert knowledge and considerable numerical experimentation. A wide range of small scale and large scale problems of varying difficulty must be solved to evaluate performance of an algorithm. The study suggests development of knowledge-based systems for practical design optimization.

The numerical study is designed and criteria for comparing the performance of algorithms are developed. Various variations of the algorithmic parameters and procedures are evaluated. Using the procedures described in the paper, other algorithms and programs can be evaluated.
