Description / Table of Contents:
Summary A rapid polarographic method for the direct estimation of molybdenum comprises extraction of molybdenum-oxinate with molten naphthalene, separation of solid naphthalene dissolution in DMF and determination by polarography using 0.1 M sodium perchlorate and 0.1 M perchloric acid as supporting electrolytes. Under these conditions molybdenum-oxinate gives a well defined wave with E 1/2=− 0.61 V vs. S.C.E. The relation between id and molybdenum concentration was linear in the range of 2.4–57.6 μg/10 ml of the solution. Among the various ions examined, citrate, oxalate, EDTA, tartrate, palladium and ferric ions when present in large amounts gave low results, but at a relatively low concentration of these ions, there was no effect. Thus, the method is fairly selective, rapid, sufficiently sensitive: Quantitative estimations can be made down to 0.24 ppm and the sensitivity can be further increased by taking larger volumes of the aqueous phase. The method can be safely applied to the estimation of molybdenum in various alloys and complex materials.
Notes:
