Summary On the basis that relationships between chromatographic retention parameters and the boiling points of the solutes are suitable for calculating retention indices in the absence of solute-stationary phase interactions, the use of several physicochemical properties of the solutes to account for the non-specific solutephase interactions according to the “dielectric approach” theory of non-specific solvation, is tested. Equations with two or more parameters, in which one of them is always the boiling point, are adjusted by the least-squares method, and their applicability to the calculation of the retention indices of the alkylbenzenes on stationary phases of different polarity is discussed on the basis of the correlation statistics.
