    Notes: Abstract Perturbations of the synaptic handling of glutamate have been implicated in the pathogenesis of brain damage after transient ischemia. Notably, the ischemic episode is associated with an increased extracellular level of glutamate and an impaired metabolism of this amino acid in glial cells. Glutamate uptake is reduced during ischemia due to breakdown of the electrochemical ion gradients across neuronal and glial membranes. We have investigated, in the rat hippocampus, whether an ischemic event additionally causes a reduced expression of the glial glutamate transporter GLT1 (Pines et al. 1992) in the postischemic phase. Quantitative immunoblotting, using antibodies recognizing GLT1, revealed a 20% decrease in the hippocampal contents of the transporter protein, 6 h after an ischemic period lasting 20 min induced by four vessel occlusion. In situ hybridization histochemistry with 35S labelled oligonucleotide probes or digoxigenin labelled riboprobes directed to GLT1 mRNA showed a decreased signal in the hippocampus, particularly in CA1. This reduction was more pronounced at 3 h than at 24 h after the ischemic event. We conclude that the levels of GLT1 mRNA and protein show a modest decrease in the postischemic phase. This could contribute to the delayed neuronal death typically seen in the hippocampal formation after transient ischemia.

    Notes: Various conflicting reports in the literature regarding the effect of oxygen on the stability of vinyl acetate (VA) toward polymerization led us to reexamine this topic using both isothermal stability tests and quasi-adiabatic calorimetry. Both commercial VA stabilized with 5-20 ppm by weight of hydroquinone (HQ) and purified, unstabilized VA exhibit lower stability to thermally initiated polymerization (at 50-120°C) in the presence of oxygen than in its absence. However, when stabilized with 3-5 ppm of HQ, both air-saturated and oxygen-free VA exhibit adequate thermal stability at normal transport and storage temperatures (25-50°C). Oxygen destabilization of VA is probably caused by the relatively low stability of VA polyperoxide rather than by the oxidation of acetaldehyde impurity to peroxyacetic acid. The length of VA polymerization induction periods is about -0.4 order in oxygen partial pressure.

    Notes: The mass spectra of 5,6,6a,7,12,12a-hexahydrobenzo[a]anthracene and 2-methoxy, 3-methoxy-, 4-methoxy and 1-methyl-4-methoxy derivatives are reported. Among the fragment ions observed under electron impact ionization, [C8H8]+· and [M—C8H8]+· can be generated by a retro-Diels-Alder process. Studies of metastable ion reactions show these ions to be formed by fragmentation directly from the molecular ion. The CA spectra of the [C8H8]+· ions from the subject compounds were compared with spectra from ions of the same composition from various sources. From these data, kinetic energy release measurements and stereochemical considerations, it is concluded that these ions are formed by a stepwise, rather than a concerted mechanism.
